Age Policy

Age for Registration Policy for Pilgrims

The target age range for WYD08 is 16 - 35. However, the event is open to people outside the age range with, in some cases, limitations and restrictions. It is expected that a higher proportion of families and a higher number of school groups will attend WYD08 than at previous events. It is in this context that this policy was developed.

The Age for Registration Policy for Pilgrims for WYD08 is:

A) Pilgrims over 18

There is no upper age limit. However, the emergency heath insurance provided in the pilgrim packages will not be available to pilgrims who are over 65 on 15 July 2008.

B) Pilgrims aged 16 to 18 travelling without a parent

NOTE: for the purposes of this policy a family is defined as at least one parent, aunt, uncle or grandparent with at least one child, niece, nephew or grandchild.

If a child turns 16 by 31 December 2008 may be registered as a pilgrim if;

  • The child is travelling as part of a registered group for the whole period of attendance at WYD08 including Days in the Dioceses (if the group is participating); and
  • written parental consent has been given for the child to travel with the nominated group; and
  • a named adult travelling with the group has accepted in writing that they will have responsibility for the child; and
  • any laws of the country of residence are met.

It will be the responsibility of the group leader to ensure that these conditions are met. WYD08 may require copies of the documentation for verification.

The Australian Government requirements for the processing of visa applications for minors travelling without their parent will be incorporated within the Egeria system. In summary, these requirements require written approval from both parents for the child to travel.

Some countries have laws and regulations relating to children leaving their jurisdiction without either or both parents. Some of these laws impose requirements on citizens of the country anywhere in the world. It is the group leader's responsibility to ensure that all members of their group are aware of and comply with relevant local legislation.

C) Children under 16 travelling without a parent

Children who do not turn 16 by 31 December 2008, travelling without a parent, will not be permitted to register.

D) Pilgrims aged under 18 travelling with a parent

Pilgrims under 18 may be registered if they are travelling with one or both parents for the whole period of attendance at WYD08 including Days in the Dioceses (if they are participating).

The Australian Government requirements for the processing of visa applications for minors travelling with their parent(s) will be incorporated within the Egeria system. In summary, these requirements require written approval from a non travelling parent for the child to travel.

Registration of Families

All members are over 16 at 31 December 2008

Family groups may register as normal provided all attending members of the family are over 16 years of age at 31 December 2008.

The family group will be allocated to the same catechesis venue(s) and to areas for major events.

At least one member under 16 at 31 December 2008

Family groups with at least one member under 16 at 31 December 2008 may register. However, WYD08 will not be able to provide accommodation for these family groups. Therefore only Packages B and C will be available.

The family group will be allocated to the same catechesis venue(s) and to areas for major events.

Unregistered family members up to the age of approximately 8 years of age, will be allowed to attend events with their family subject to space limitations. While it is the intention to allow families to attend WYD08 events as a family, registered pilgrims will be given a priority. Discretion will rest with access attendants at the event.
