Marie L. Garrett was appointed Brookhaven’s first city manager in February 2013 following a national search. Prior to the appointment, she served as Brookhaven’s interim city manager for three months.

Garrett has more than 30 years of experience launching and running city governments, including working as a top-level administrator in Alpharetta, Canton, Johns Creek and now Brookhaven.

Garrett also has advised other metro area cities on planning, development, public administration and budgeting. She also has worked with governments in Texas and Oklahoma.

In addition, Garrett has taught government courses at Georgia State University and Reinhardt University.

Garrett has a master’s in public and urban affairs from Georgia State University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia.

Garrett and her husband have three sons and reside in Alpharetta.

About the city manager position

The city manager serves as the chief administrative officer for the city. The city manager is appointed by the mayor and then voted on by city council.

The city manager is responsible for ensuring that all city ordinances and laws are enforced. The city manager executes all contracts, makes recommendations to the mayor and council and prepares the budget. She is also in charge of supervising and hiring all city employees, except for the mayor’s appointees of the city clerk, attorney and accountant.

The city manager also serves as the tourism director.
