It used to be that all college eligible kids from La Trinidad and neighboring towns list Baguio as their first preference to get a college degree. But nowadays, there seems to be a shift in this preference.
With an educational landscape that used to be lorded over by Benguet State University (BSU) and dotted by vocational school establishments, La Trinidad is now home to a growing number of tertiary schools offering alternative options for Cordillerans and lowlanders alike. Besides, the cost of living in La Trinidad is generally cheaper than in Baguio.
Criminology, Agriculture, Nursing, Home and Restaurant Management and Education courses are by far the most popular courses enrolled by students in these La Trinidad universities. BSU, King’s College and the Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC) are the top three tertiary schools in La Trinidad who have acquired accreditation from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). In recent years, it was observed that Korean owned schools and tutorial centers for English have mushroomed in La Trinidad. There is also a growth of Filipino owned private schools that offer pre-school to highschool education in La Trinidad.
For those who opted for skills- based education, they are enrolled in one of La Trinidad’s technical-vocational schools. There are three public tech-voc schools in the municipality and 26 private ones.
With a 97.99 percent literacy rate, La Trinidad has become an attractive educational center in the North. The quality of education here is almost at par with any educational center among emerging communities in the Philippines because BSU and CCDC have been producing graduates who are getting top placements and majority numbers in government licensure exams. ***JD/LPader
