The term "ideology" is generally associated with a negative connotation. On the other hand the listing of some circulating ideology definitions shows that the term "ideology" is awarded a number of different meanings, which are not only negative:
- systematically distorted communication
- something that permits the subject to take position
- socially motivated ways of thinking
- Identity thinking
- socially necessary illusion
- action-oriented complex of convictions
- intermingling of language and phenomenal reality
- semiotic conclusion
The ambiguity of the term ideology is based on its immanent tradition of the Enlightenment, but the view, what enlightenment is or can be, has been changing strongly until today, which has produced new definitions of ideology.
The intersubjectivity loss of the ideology term has not changed its topicality in the scientific and social discourse, which is the reason why it is the tendency of Ideologieforschung.de to point out the meaning and function of ideologies as well as the boundaries of any ideology research.
