HMMWV Variants

US Army HMMWV Replacement Plan

Below is a listing of prioritization of HMMWV vehicles in the US Army. Legacy HMMWV vehicles (initial production configuration M998's, M1038's, M1025's, etc.) are now considered obsolete and are being phased out of service. M1151, M1152, M1165 and M1167 configurations are flooding Army inventories and freeing up the older models to fill existing shortages across the US Army Reserve and National Guard. Any that are deemed excess to US Army requirements are being sent to rebuild to be reconfigured. As a result of the emphasis on pushing the older configurations out of service, I will spend the next few months trying to complete photo walk-arounds of M998's, M1038's, M1097's, M1025's etc. as their days are literally numbered.

M1151/52/65 Series HMMWV

M707 STRIKER also known as M707 KNIGHT HMMWV

The M707 Striker is a M1025A2 HMMWV with

The M707 Striker HMMWV's were typically assigned to a 'COLT' (Combat Observation Lasing Team).

The M707 Striker/Knight fire support vehicle is a M1025A2 HMMWV based system that provides for efficient fire support planning, direction, controlling, target designation, and night observation for both heavy and light forces. The HMMWV had a modified cupola designed to accept the Ground Vehicular Laser Locator Designator (G/VLLD). Other improvements to both vehicles include the addition of the lightweight computer unit (LCU) and the hand-held terminal unit (HTU). The initial systems fielded used the outdated and unsupportable GVLLD as its sensor to locate and designate targets. All systems were then upgraded with the

The M707 Knight w/FS3 provides sensor parity (2d Gen FLIR optics) between maneuver platforms and fire support platforms. The Knight w/FS3 exceeds the 5km night designation range ORD requirement, which is twice the capability of the AN/TAS-4 on the obsolete GVLLD. Knight w/FS3 helps bridge the sensor capability gap by providing fire supporters with a 2d Gen FLIR optic (LRAS 3) and a Laser Designation Module (LDM), which greatly enhances their capability to locate and designate targets. The sensor capability will be greatly enhanced by the modification of the FS3 on the M707 Knight. The Knight w/FS3 has 5x the range capability of the Knight w/GVLLD. The Knight w/FS3 also exceeds the 5km night designation ORD requirement, in which the Knight w/GVLLD achieves a <2km night designation range.

TRUCK, UTILITY: TOW CARRIER, ARMORED, 1-1/4 TON, 4x4, M966; M966A1; M1121

I've been doing some hunting and researching in regards to the M1121 TOW Missile Carrier. Other than being listed on the -10 Operators Manual, there seems to be very little information or few images available which, at times, has caused me to question how much this vehicle actually truly served. Well, in my hunt recently, I found a 'Sling & Tie Down Data' plate for sale. Needless to say, I bought this thing in a hurry to add to my collection of data plates. Here is a picture of it.

UPDATE ON M1121 20 DEC 2011- I have spoke with a person involved with the M1121 program. He indicated to me that all M1121 TOW Carriers are converted M966 TOW Carriers. There were never any M1121 TOW Carriers produced as new vehicles. The M966 TOW Carriers were converted based on a Modification Work Order (MWO)  9-2320-923-50-1 Modification Of The Improved Target Aquisition System (ITAS) High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) M966.

TRUCK, UTILITY: EXPANDED CAPACITY, ITAS/TOW, CARRIER M1167

The M1167 HMMWV is the TOW missile carrier variant of the M1151A1/B1 HMMWV. The M1151P1 HMMWV was used as the basis for the M1167 ITAS/TOW HMMWV.

The M1167 consists of the M1025A2 body; a full armor package known as the Integrated Armor Package (IAP) with B1 kit; an air conditioning system; and the M1113 Expanded Capacity Vehicle (ECV) heavy chassis. The vehicle is equipped with the ITAS/TOW missile launcher mounted on the roof of the vehicle with the TOW Gunner Protection Kit (TGPK), Far Target Locator (FTL), six (6) TOW missiles, a secondary weapon, lithium batteries (to meet the dismounted requirements of the ITAS/TOW), a battery charging device and a cargo bed missile rack.

The TGPK allows for full use of the ITAS with secondary weapons and allows TOW missile firing. It provides better protection with no open holes in the TGPK unit and has a rear back shield that can fold down. The design of the TGPK is based on a U.S. Marine Corps design as used in the M1114 HMMWV.

The M1167 is used to transport and launch TOW missiles to defeat field fortified positions, Reinforced Urban Structures, and Main Battle Tanks. The weapons platform can be traversed 360 degrees and the launcher elevated to 20 degrees and depressed 10 degrees. The major components on the M1167 that are different from the M1151A1/B1 are the items added for the operation of the ITAS/TOW and described above. The M1167 gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is 13,100 pounds.

The M1167 HMMWV serves as a weapons platform for the Close Combat Missile System – Heavy (currently known as the ITAS/TOW). The M1167 HMMWV provides an anti-tank, anti-material, and anti-structure operational capability that allows the Infantry Battalion to concentrate on decisive maneuvers by dismounted Infantry. It represents the primary precision close combat missile capability of the Infantry Battalion, capable of defeating any armored threat out to extended ranges. The M1167 provides protection for the force by use of its precision long-range missile capability to destroy enemy armor and material beyond the effective range of enemy weapons. This capability significantly enhances the Infantry Battalions and Reconnaissance Squadron’s flexibility and versatility across the range of military operations. The XM1167 mounts only one primary weapon, be it either an ITAS/TOW missile/launcher, an M2 0.50-caliber or a MK19 40mm and is capable of mounting one secondary weapon, either a M240 or M249 squad automatic weapon, at the same time.

This photo is of XM1167-2 (vehicle B) that went on to be type classified as the M1167.
