OKC Skatepark named one of “Ten Best” in National Geographic Travel Guide

(March 31, 2009) - The secret is out about Oklahoma City’s Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park.  What skaters and bikers from across the U.S. have lauded for years has now made the pages of a national publication.  “The Ten Best of Everything Families:  An Ultimate Guide for Travelers,” published by the National Geographic Society, lists the action sports park as one of the best skateparks in the country.  It’s one of many listings from the book featuring Oklahoma-based attractions.

According to the National Geographic Society, the “The 10 Best of Everything Families:  An Ultimate Guide for Travelers” is a unique publication because it culls the opinions of people who have experienced first-hand the attractions and destinations listed. Author Susan H. Magsamen worked with field contributors from across the United States to compile research and information for the book.  The researchers spoke with hundreds of people in thousands of communities across the country who were willing to share their “in-the-know” recommendations on the best, most fun, and must-see places for families.

“The Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park represents one of our signature projects over the past five years, and we were betting on its having far-reaching popularity,” said Wendel Whisenhunt, Parks and Recreation Director.  “What makes our inclusion in this list so gratifying is that it comes straight from the people on the street. This is a great honor for the park.”

A frequent destination for skaters and bikers from across Oklahoma and the country, the Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park opened in February 2005.  Local BMX biker and entrepreneur Mat Hoffman lent his name to the action park, which features two distinct areas, a multi-feature bowl course, and a street course.  The park was designed by Site Design Group, one of the premier skatepark designers in the country.   Funding for the skatepark came from the 2000 General Obligation Bond.

"Oklahoma City honored me with the opportunity to contribute to my hometown and memorialize my passion for building Action Sports through creating one of the best action sports parks in the World - the Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park,” said Hoffman.  “I know people will use this book to plan their family vacations and discover all the hidden treasures Oklahoma has to offer. Labor omnia vincit!"

The Mat Hofffman Action Sports Park is located at 1700 S. Robinson, adjacent to the Oklahoma River.  Admission to the park is free.  Hours are dawn to 11 p.m. year-round.  Helmets are required for all riders and skaters.  The Mat Hoffman Action Sports Park is operated by the City of Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department.  For more information, call (405) 297-2211 or visit online at www.okc.gov/parks.
