Historic District

There are more than thirty neighborhoods in the District of Columbia, including Cleveland Park, that have been designated in the DC Inventory of Historic Places as historic districts. The DC Historic Preservation Review Board is the designator. Applications for historic district status may be sponsored by private property owners, public agencies, governmental agencies, or, as is the case in Cleveland Park, by a private preservation organization such as CPHS. Supporting documentation is submitted to HRPB. The staff holds public hearings and evaluates the material submitted and makes recommendations to the Board. HPRB votes on the designation and may also recommend that the neighborhood be nominated to the National Trust of Historic Places.
