Japan's talents ready for Aquatic Festival
Japan's pool and open water swimmers, divers, synchro swimmers and water polo players are fine-tuning their preparation for the FINA World Championships in Shanghai (CHN) next month. Ryosuke Irie and his members of the Japan National Team returned home on June 27 after a training camp in Europe, which included legs of the Mare Nostrum in France and Spain.
Irie's marks during the Mare Nostrum included 53.72 in 100m backstroke and 1:54.34 in 200m backstroke. Meanwhile, another Japan's swimming great, Kosuke Kitajima, clocked 1:01.02 in the 100m breaststroke and 2:11.02 in the 200m breaststroke at the Mission Viejo International Invitational Meet, held from June 25-26 in California (USA).
Swimming Coach wanted for Iran's national team
The I.R. Iran Amateur Swimming Federation is looking for a high-level Swimming Coach for their national team. The I.R. Iran Amateur Swimming Federation is currently working with 14 foreign coaches. Interested coaches can send their application and/or questions to the I.R. Iran Amateur Swimming Federation directly.
Swimming Canada adds Open Water swimmers to Shanghai Team
Swimming Canada announced the addition of 6 swimmers to its FINA World Championships Team that will compete in Shanghai this summer. These six veteran athletes will represent Canada in the Open-Water events (5, 10 and 25km).Richard Weinberger and Aimeson King of Victoria were the top 2 qualifiers in the men’s 10km while Zsofia Balazs of Toronto and Nadine Williams of Sherwood Park, Alta, placed first and second respectively during last week’s Canadian World Open Water Trials in Fort Myers, Florida, earning them a place on Canada’s Worlds Team. All four athletes will compete in the 5 and 10km as well as the new team event. Simon Tobin of Quebec City and Xavier Desharnais of Lasalle were also added to the mix to compete in the 25km event.
Bovell Leads TT Worlds Team
2004 Athens Olympic Medallist George Bovell III will lead a team of three athletes to the FINA World Long Course Championships in Shanghai China from July 16th - 30th.
Joshua Mc Leod and Cherelle Thompson were the two other athletes ratified by the council of Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT) to represent the country at these biennial games. The team is being coached by Joseph Mc Leod.
British Swimming unveils World Championship team
British Swimming National Performance Director Michael Scott has described the national team bound for next month’s FINA World Championships in Shanghai as “one of the most competitive British teams ever assembled”. Forty athletes have been formerly selected to the British Gas GBR Swimming Team and they will finalise preparations at a holding camp in Osaka, Japan before arriving in Shanghai.Double-Olympic Champion Becky Adlington, Commonwealth Champion and World Championship silver medallist Fran Halsall will lead the challenge for the women while double-Commonwealth Champion James Goddard and World Champion Liam Tancock head-up the men’s contingent.
GB Youth Team for Lima announced
The British Gas GBR swimming team for the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships has been announced by British Swimming. The 18 talented youngsters will compete in Lima, Peru against the best swimmers aged 18 or under from around the globe. The selections were made at the British Gas Swimming Championships held in Manchester earlier this year.
The team includes 2010 European Junior champion, Emma Saunders, who also won a relay medal at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi and European Junior Champion Sophie Smith, who also competed for the senior team at the GB versus Germany meet earlier this year.
British divers announced for Shanghai
World Champion Tom Daley and Olympic silver medallist Pete Waterfield will lead the British Gas GBR Diving Team into competition at the World Championships in Shanghai this summer. The 11 athletes will take on the best in the world as they try to qualify places for the country at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Daley and Waterfield will feature in both men’s Platform events and will face a tough challenge from world number one diving nation, China, who will be competing on home soil. But after beating the Chinese pair in Sheffield at the FINA/Midea Diving World Series the Brits will go into the event with confidence.
Rio de Janeiro's Fluminense and Flamengo win Water Polo National Trophy
The Fluminense Football Club and Clube Regatas do Flamengo from Rio de Janeiro both won the Brazilian Water Polo National Trophy in the men's and women's field, respectively. In the men’s final, the Fluminense team defeated Botafogo 6-5 in an exciting and dramatic match. Fluminense's Gabriel Reis was the great scorer of the match, with to winning shots. Leonardo Real of Hebraica Club was the top scorer of the competition with a total 21 goals.
Canadian athletes set to take on the World’s best in Shanghai
Members of Canada’s World Aquatic Championships competing in Water Polo, Diving, Swimming and Synchronized swimming, showed great enthusiasm and confidence on June 7 during a news conference in Montreal prior to their departure for Shanghai, China, where they will face the toughest challenge prior to London 2012.
Athletes are aiming for podium performances and establishing their rightful place on the world scene at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai from July 16-31.
Young talents make their mark at Japan Open
Japanese young breaststrokers start making their mark on the international swimming scene, as seen at the Japan Open 2011 held in Osaka from May 20-22.Kanako Watanabe made terrific progress among women’s breaststrokers. She's just 14, not big (163.5cm and 54.5kg) and still a junior high-school girl. In Osaka, she won three events: the 50m in 31.83, the 100m in 1:07.10 and the and 200m in 2:23.90.
