Easter exodus underway

Norway's long, traditional Easter holiday got off to a shaky start on Friday, when more equipment trouble plagued the train system around Oslo. Road work also threatened traffic delays on the main highway north of the airport at Gardermoen.

Oil sales stuff state treasury

Norway's state treasury is set to overflow, local analysts claim. Some think the price of North Sea crude oil will hit USD 130 a barrel, pumping even more "petrokroner" into the state budget and giving politicians few excuses to limit its use.

CIA flight landed in Stavanger

A Beechcraft 350C aircraft believed to be used by the US Central Intelligence Agency landed at the Sola airport south of Stavanger Friday morning. Some politicians are calling for an investigation, fearing the flight carried prisoners of war being sent to US military bases.

Gays set to win marriage rights

The Norwegian government put forth a long-expected gay marriage bill on Friday, clearing the way for homosexual couples to secure the same marriage rights as heterosexuals. (The bill is the first major victory for new government minister Anniken Huitfeldt, photo).

The corporate assembly at troubled forestry giant Norske Skog voted to close paper plants in the Czech Republic and South Korea and shut down one of three paper machines at Follum in Norway, but rebel shareholders aren't happy. A new battle to reverse the decisions is underway.

Police and customs officials reported Thursday that they'd made what's thought to be the largest heroin seizure ever at the border checkpoint at Svinesund.

Auschwitz survivor laid to rest

Julius Paltiel, one of the few Norwegian Jews to survive the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz, was buried in Trondheim on Wednesday with the king present to honour Paltiel's memory.

Former government minister reveals Alzheimer diagnosis

Jan Henry T Olsen, who was Norway's high-profile fisheries minister in the mid-1990s, revealed Wednesday that he's suffering from a brain disease believed to be Alzheimer's. The 51-year-old Olsen hopes he can contribute to more awareness and openness about the dreaded ailment.
