I have visited· I would like to visit

stonetracker visited on 1st Oct 2021 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Mounds A-D mostly plowed or eroded down to nothing. I'm told E is still extant in woods but very tough to get to through the overgrowth. I gave up trying :-).

Marsden Mounds
Marsden Mounds submitted by bat400 : Mounds B, C, and D lie along the edge of this wood and the mowed grass plaza. They are quite low (only a few feet high) but still distinct. Photo by bat400, Oct 2011. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Group of Artificial Mounds in Richland County, Louisiana.
A group of 5 mounds on or along side of a natural "D" shaped ridge. Occupation of the site was as early as 1500 BC (contemporary to the Poverty Point culture), while components of the mounds and a central plaza area date from 400 to 1200 CE. It is the type site for the Marsden Phase (500-600 CE).

The eastern mounds (A, B, C, and D) are relatively small and indistinct now, probably from plowing. Only the smaller mounds B, C, and D are distinct in the edge of a wooded ridge. Mound E is a large square platform mound rising 12-15 feet high with nearly vertical sides. However, because it was built in a low area along the natural ridge, the top of the mound is roughly level to the "plaza" area. This site is within the boundary of Poverty Point Reservoir State Park and recreation area and is part of the Louisiana Ancient Mounds Trail. You can park very close to the mounds in a small turnout near a historical marker. Or, you can park in the car park of a nearby camp ground. Mound E is difficult to get close to because of this location in a low lying, brush filled area. A National Register of Historic Places site.

Marsden Mounds
Marsden Mounds submitted by bat400 : Mound A lies between the marker and Mounds B, C, and D, which are right at the edge of the woods seen in the background. Mound A is large in diameter, but so reduced in height that it is difficult to see at all. Photo by bat400, October 2011. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Marsden Mounds
Marsden Mounds submitted by bat400 : Marden Mounds. The largest of the five mounds, Mound E, is in a wooded area and it difficult to photograph or approach. The mound is square and set in a low area directly along a ridge, giving the impression of the structure having been built at the bottom of a hole. Photo by bat400, Oct 2011.
