Treasurer Kennedy joins fray to succeed Vitter
Louisiana Treasurer John Kennedy, who was recently elected to a new term in that office, will seek the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. David Vitter.Kennedy announced his intentions Tuesday morning.In a statement, he said: "The reason is pretty simple: I want my country back. I'm scared we are losing it."He is the latest in a growing line of Republicans to seek the seat, joining (among others) Rep. Charles Boustany, Rep. John Fleming and retired Air Force Col. Rob Maness.The 2016 campaign will be Kennedy's third try for the Senate. Most recently, in 2008, he unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu. Kennedy won his most recent election, late last year, with 80 percent of the vote in the race for state treasurer.Vitter announced he would not seek reelection to the seat he has held since 1999. Vitter ran unsuccessfully for governor last fall.
