New Haven 4th Most Dangerous City: Report

A new report ranks New Haven as one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S.

The Elm City ranks 4th Most Dangerous City, behind Flint, Michigan, Detroit, Michigan, and St. Louis, Missouri, according to Business Insider. The daily newsletter used FBI crime statistics from 2010, and listed the cities based on the numbers of violent crimes including murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, per 100,000 people.

New Haven had 1,584 violent crimes per 100,000 people and 628 robberies for every 100,000 people in the city, triple the national average, according to Business Insider.

In the past two days alone, there were seven shootings in New Haven.

"It's been a frustrating and frightening 48 hours for a lot of our neighbors," Mayor John DeStefano said. DeStefano joined police officials Wednesday to announce a plan to increase the visibility of officers on New Haven streets.

They say much of the violence centers around illegal drugs, and they will target areas they know to be problems.

"We're not going away. We're staying here and we're going to be doing this on a a day-to-day basis," Assistant Police Chief Pat Redding said. "I have spoken to the community in the past few weeks. They love seeing us out there and doing this kind of enforcement."
