“I would offer Brock almost insulting deal that I didn’t expect him to take” - Nick Wright slams 49ers’ potential $55M+ deal for Brock Purdy

The San Francisco 49ers must decide if they should give Brock Purdy a large contract despite concerns from analyst Nick Wright. Wright advises caution, suggesting Purdy's success may be due to a strong team. With key players leaving, the upcoming season will test Purdy's true ability. The financial implications of a big contract are significant.

The San Francisco 49ers are facing a critical decision that could shape their future, should they break the bank for Brock Purdy? The young quarterback has exceeded expectations since being drafted in 2022, but not everyone is convinced he deserves a massive payday just yet. Analyst Nick Wright has issued a stark warning, urging the franchise to hold off on offering Purdy a blockbuster deal until he proves he can thrive without a powerhouse roster around him.

Nick Wright’s skepticism: Is Brock Purdy a product of the system?

During an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Wright expressed doubts about Brock Purdy’s long-term value, suggesting that the 49ers should test his true capabilities before committing to a lucrative contract.
“If I were running the Niners, I would offer Brock such a team-friendly, almost insulting deal, that I didn’t expect him to take because I really do want to see him this year without a super team around him,” Wright stated. "If he looks like he did last year without a super team around him, and if that’s the case, then that’s simply a player you cannot pay 55 plus million dollars.” (Via: Sportskeeda)
Nick Wright’s concern stems from the notion that Brock Purdy has benefited significantly from the elite talent surrounding him. With a dominant defense, a strong offensive line, and star playmakers, he has had the luxury of operating in a near-perfect setup. But with major roster changes this offseason, the 49ers may soon discover whether Purdy can carry the team or if he’s simply thriving in ideal conditions.

The Financial Dilemma: Can the 49ers afford to pay up?

Reports indicate that Purdy’s camp is eyeing a contract in the range of $50 million per year, while the 49ers are willing to go as high as $45 million annually. If he lands a deal comparable to Jalen Hurts, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow, San Francisco could face serious financial constraints in maintaining a competitive roster.
Already, the team has lost key defensive pieces like Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga, and Charvarius Ward. On offense, the departure of Deebo Samuel and fullback Kyle Juszczyk further weakens Purdy’s supporting cast. The franchise also parted ways with defensive end Leonard Floyd, taking an $8.6 million hit in dead money but freeing up $1.5 million in cap space. Currently, the team sits at around $34 million in available cap space, making every financial move crucial.

Should 49ers bet big on Brock Purdy?

Brock Purdy’s impressive rise from being the last pick in the 2022 draft to leading the 49ers to deep playoff runs is undeniable. However, he sustain his success without a loaded roster? If San Francisco hands him a massive deal and he struggles without top-tier talent, the franchise could find itself in a difficult financial bind for years.
With major changes looming, the 2024 season will be the ultimate test for Brock Purdy. If he can prove he’s the real deal without an elite supporting cast, he’ll justify the hefty contract he’s seeking. But if his performance dips, the 49ers may have dodged a costly mistake by waiting. Either way, all eyes will be on Purdy as he looks to silence the doubters and cement himself as the future of the franchise.
