For Tarika Tripathi, Diwali is “all about lights, flowers and family gatherings.” The Dukaan actress, who joined us for Diwali shopping, says, “Diwali is about happiness, positivity and new beginnings. I love people visiting shops that are full of decorative items and lights. I encourage people to buy diyas from street vendors, as it makes their Diwali special.”
‘I prefer sustainable decoration for Diwali’
Tarika remembers how her mother used to shop for decorations for Diwali, and she joins her now. She says, “We don’t shop for new décor every year, but my mom and I make sure we have the newest diyas at home. I prefer buying sustainable items from local vendors and shops.”
She adds, “My favourite for decorating the house is a wide range of diyas. Our house is on the ground floor, and we put diyas on every window and at the entrance. We put up a toran, and I love decorating the house with scented candles and fresh flowers every day. Also, I always buy soan papdi for Diwali. I know there are memes about it, but it’s one of my favourite things to have on Diwali.”
‘Family gatherings have been a part of Diwali festivities since childhood’
Talking about Diwali celebrations, Tarika shares, “Before my nana and nani passed away, I used to spend every Diwali at their house. Now we have gatherings at our place, where we cook food for 15-20 people. My cousins and I eagerly wait to go to our relative’s house to seek blessings, while getting envelopes filled with money (laughs). At home, we talk about old times, games and stay up till late.”

Tarika and her family also follow a special ritual during the festival. She shares, “We donate diyas to a temple which has a big puja on Bestu Varas. We also provide food to the homeless people and kids every Diwali; that’s the least we can do to make their Diwali better. I haven’t bought rangoli colours for a long time as I haven’t been able to make a rangoli. I am excited to buy them this year, as I will be making rangolis after a long time."
"I don’t believe in buying new clothes every year, saal mein kabhi na kabhi kuch naya toh khareed hi lete hai. So, I save that new dress for wearing on Diwali or Bestu Varas. This year, I am planning to wear saris during the festival."
