A viral TikTok video showing a woman scrolling on what looks like a transparent phone has caused confusion and curiosity online. A user named Cat (@askcatgpt) posted the video, viewed over 50 million times, which shows her standing in line at a boba tea shop, holding what looks like a clear, glass-like smartphone, as per New York Post. The caption of the video reads, “I’m sorry WTF IS THAT?????” prompting viewers to guess what the object is.
Many users assumed it was a new tech device. Some believed it was a “Nokia transparent phone.” One user wrote “She’s on a mission from the future,” and another said, “Losing that would be a NIGHTMARE to find.”
In a follow-up video, Cat clarified that the object is not an actual phone but something called a “methaphone,” a clear acrylic object shaped like a smartphone. “It’s exactly what it looks like, a clear piece of acrylic shaped like an iPhone,” she said. According to Cat, her friend created the methaphone as a social experiment to explore phone addiction.

“He told me what he wanted to test is if we’re all so addicted to our phones, then could you potentially curb someone’s addiction by replacing the feeling of having a phone in your pocket with something that feels exactly the same?”
Cat mentioned that the methaphone is already sold out. While she admitted that the methaphone hasn’t actually reduced her screen time, she asked viewers whether such an object could help people feel more present, NYP noted.
Responses were mixed. “Nobody’s addicted to holding phones, they’re addicted to the apps,” one user wrote. Another added, “Sooo it’s not a phone… end of story.”
