Imagine going to watch a live cricket match with your girlfriend and getting informed about your debut while parking your car. The cricketers toil hard for decades in domestic cricket and other leagues to win the elusive national cap. But some of the cricketers make quick progress. Luke Pomersbach belongs to the list of players who made quick progress but he had the most unusual debut in Australian cricket's history.
The left-handed batsman was at the WACA, with his girlfriend, to enjoy the live T20I action between Australia and New Zealand in December 2007. The left-handed batsman was parking his car when he got informed about his debut. And why was he called?
Brad Hodge suffered a back injury before the game and Australia had to call a player who didn't even have his cricket kit there. "The Australian manager rang me just as I was parking my car, and I thought it was one of my mates having a joke. I asked him whether he was joking, and he said, 'no mate get yourself to the rooms as quick as you can'," he said after his debut.
Coming out to bat at number 6, Pomersbach smashed 15 off 6 balls. He hit a six and a boundary in his knock. Pomersbach's unusual debut turned out to be his only outing for Australia and he never earned any Australia cap again.
He played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings in IPL. He started his IPL career with PBKS in 2008 and later played for RCB. Pomersbach's career was full of controversies.
He only played 1 T20I, 39 first-class, 37 List A and 56 T20 matches. He scored 2785 runs in red-ball cricket and 666 runs in List A cricket. He hit 1228 runs in the shortest format. Pomersbach last played a professional game in 2014.
