Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered their eighth defeat in 10 matches and remain stuck in 10th place in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) table after a loss to Punjab Kings (BKS) by four wickets on Wednesday (April 30) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The Super Kings have lost their third match in a row. With four matches remaining in the league stage, the MS Dhoni-led side has just four points to show. The defeat to PBKS also marks the first instance of them losing five matches in a season at Chepauk.
Can CSK still Qualify For IPL 2025 Playoffs?
The Super Kings have become the first team in the 2025 IPL to be officially knocked out and have no mathematical chance of qualification for the playoffs. The five-time champions can now reach a maximum of 12 points, which will not be enough to make the top four in any case.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (14) and Punjab Kings (13) have already surpassed their best possible tally. Meanwhile, three teams (Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Delhi Capitals) are level on 12 points. All three of them are yet to play each other, which ensures that at least two of them will cross the mark, meaning that even if the Men in Yellow get a major Net Run Rate (NRR) boost with four victories in a row, they will not qualify.
Super Kings will now travel to Bengaluru and Kolkata to face RCB and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before playing their last home match against Rajasthan Royals (RR). CSK will wrap up their campaign against GT in Ahmedabad on May 18.
RR are also one defeat away from being officially knocked out of the playoffs race, while Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad SRH have the cushion of more defeats but will need several other results to go their way.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have a more than decent chance, but it is the current top five that are the favourites to take the fourth playoff spot.
