In a strong message to Pakistan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared that the Indus Waters Treaty will 'never be restored', stating that India would redirect water flow to states like Rajasthan.
In a clear indication of India's hardened stance against Pakistan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Indus Waters Treaty will "never be restored". Speaking in an interview, Shah said the Narendra Modi government had placed the 1960 agreement in abeyance in response to Pakistan's continuous violation of peace and progress—the very foundational spirit of the treaty. "International treaties can't be annulled unilaterally but we had the right to put it in abeyance, which we have done," he said.
Shah stated that the water flowing to Pakistan "unjustifiably" would now be redirected to Indian states like Rajasthan. Speaking in an interview with Times of India, Shah said, "Paani Rajasthan tak jayega," adding that India would construct a canal to utilise its rightful share. "We will use water that rightfully belongs to India. Pakistan will be starved of water that it has been getting unjustifiably," the Home Minister said.
The decision to halt implementation of the treaty comes amid heightened tensions following recent terrorist attacks in Kashmir, including one in Pahalgam. Shah described the strike on Indian tourists as a "deliberate attempt" by Pakistan to derail peace in the Valley. "The youth in Kashmir realises the evil plan. There were protests in every town in the Valley after the attack," he said, noting an unprecedented display of solidarity.
Responding to Congress criticism over Operation Sindoor and the retaliatory strikes, Shah said India had inflicted "damage on Pakistani airbases" while avoiding civilian targets. He rejected allegations of losses, praising the precision of Indian agencies and scientists in developing effective weapon systems. "Our forces struck them with full force. Pakistan sought a suspension of strikes within no time," he claimed.
Shah also reiterated the government's stance that any future terrorist attack will be treated as an act of war. “PM Modi has said so repeatedly, there should not be any confusion about it,” he said, warning that India would not hesitate to respond with full force to any fresh misadventure by Islamabad. He also dismissed any need for special reassurance to tourists, claiming their confidence in the Valley had returned.
On Jammu and Kashmir’s future, Shah said the restoration of statehood would happen “at an appropriate time,” echoing past statements by Prime Minister Modi. “There should be no doubt about that,” he said, adding that the government had conducted fair elections and ended the “subterranean” feeling of separatism through the abrogation of Article 370.
Taking a broader view of India’s internal security, Shah also linked the tough stance on water and cross-border aggression to the Modi government’s broader doctrine of national interest. “Our country is not a dharamshala. If you need to visit India, you must obtain a valid visa,” he said, reiterating that India’s security—whether on rivers, borders, or terror fronts—was non-negotiable.
