Delhi Weather Today: Delhi woke up to a dramatic change in weather on Friday as an early-morning thunderstorm and heavy downpour swept through the city, throwing life out of gear. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms today. The question is, will such thunderstorms continue to create havoc in the national capital today as well? Let’s check the forecast.
According to IMD, the national capital recorded 77 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, the second-highest single-day rainfall for May since 1901. The record remains 119.3 mm, reported on May 20, 2021.
The storm caused widespread waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas, and tragically led to the collapse of a house, resulting in the deaths of a woman and her three children.

Flight Chaos at Delhi Airport

The heavy rainstorm also triggered major disruptions at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, the country’s busiest. At least three flights were diverted — two to Jaipur and one to Ahmedabad — while over 500 flights were delayed, according to Flightradar24 data.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) issued multiple advisories through the day, acknowledging weather-related delays but confirming that the airport remained fully operational. Airlines including IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet warned passengers of delays and diversions due to air traffic congestion and poor weather visibility. Many advised travellers to use Delhi Metro services instead of road transport due to blockages and waterlogging around the airport.

Delhi Weather Forecast Today: Thunderstorms Here to Stay

The IMD has ruled out any heatwave conditions for the next few days, offering relief from the usual May heat. A yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorms today, This means the weather will remain unsettled, with generally cloudy skies, light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds expected to persist through the week. Wind speeds could reach up to 30–40 kmph, with gusts occasionally stronger.
The Science Behind the Storm
Meteorologists attribute the sudden, intense weather to the merging of three weather systems. These include:
  • An upper-air cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan,
  • Another cyclonic system over northeast Rajasthan and adjoining northwest Madhya Pradesh,
  • And strong southeasterly winds converging over Delhi from both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
This rare combination of systems created a favourable synoptic pattern that intensified the storm and rainfall, making it a rare event for this time of year.

Delhiites Advised to Stay Cautious

With thunderstorms, showers, and gusty winds expected to continue, residents are advised to plan commutes with care, stay indoors during intense weather spells, and monitor official advisories for updates. The unseasonal chill and rain may be a welcome break from the summer heat — but they serve as a stark reminder of how rapidly weather patterns can shift.
