To adapt to meet their needs, you need to first assess their needs. This is so that you would know how to adapt your materials accordingly. You must evaluate their current performance. This is so that you would know if your materials are able to help them in their lessons or not. You should also find out what teaching methods and ways are suitable for them. This is because every student has their own needs.

Teaching materials are falling short, it’s a signal that today’s learners are ready for more than just static content. They’re not just passive consumers anymore. They’re thinkers, creators, collaborators. To truly meet their unique needs, we must shift from delivering one-size-fits-all content to co-creating learning journeys with students. Dynamic content creation is the key. Content that responds to student voices, adapts to their pace, and reflects their curiosities. I would prefer giving them a collaborative learning environment where students aren’t just learning about the world, but shaping their understanding within it, alongside peers and mentors.

To adapt teaching materials, assess student needs through observation and feedback, then diversify instructional strategies using real-life examples, technology, and hands-on activities. Provide choices and regularly review and adjust materials to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

I'd start by listening—through quick feedback loops, check-ins, or anonymous surveys—to understand where they're struggling. Then I'd adapt the materials using more visuals, real-life examples, and flexible formats like bite-sized videos or interactive tasks. I'd also engage the audience in conversation and assign small, reflective homework to deepen learning and make it more personal and active.

I would add that knowing how the student learns is more important than the topic or content. If the media or delivery does not suit their learning style, then they will not get much out of it.

What I like to do with my students is playing games. In general, this is very effective and improve both understanding and remembering. We are all natural players, and this specificity started when we were born and still remain till our end. That’s something that creates bonds and relationships. You don’t need a lot of tools to play games with your students. You need creativity and a touch of craziness. For me, it always worked better than what I expected !

More than most, you’ll know your curriculum and your students. So speak to them. Work out what drives them and then build or buy the materials you need. I particularly mention this for AI as it can be very fast to develop.

Assessing needs is critical. Some prefer hands-on, some visual aids, and most learn best by having to teach others whether customers or their peers.

You need to ask them if they are able to understand your materials or not. This is so that you would know if you need to make it easier or harder. You should also ask them to give you opinions on what type of materials would be able to make them understand the lessons better. This is so that you would be able to change your materials accordingly.

This is exactly what's needed to support learners on a granular level. Learners need to be heard and then education tailored for them

It is important to know that while feedback from your students matters, what matters more is whether the material is working. If they are learning, the material is working and may simply need some adjustments. Remember that students are not always the best measure of whether the content is effective.

Work should be presented in the same way it will be graded, so that students become familiar with how they will be assessed. Without this, too much variety can undermine their understanding of expectations.

You must always update your contents when it comes to your teaching materials. This is to ensure that it's always up-to-date. You need to evaluate your materials. This is so that you would know if the information in your materials are up-to-date with the current syllabus or not. You should also update your contents so that it's able to suit the current teaching methods. This is so that you wouldn't have trouble when using it to teach your students.

Ive found it’s helpful to build my students’ interests into the questions I ask. I have students whose greatest love is ⚽️, then there are free writing about games, practice, strategies, etc. Oh, you love to cook/bake for your family? How are you measuring ingredients? Following multi-step directions is a struggle? Let’s follow the directions to make slime, 🍪, or something else interesting to you. In every class, we have 2 non-negotiable rules or standard truths. First, we treat everyone with respect. Everyone makes mistakes and we don’t make fun of them for it. Second, mistakes are welcomed here. No one is perfect AND you learn through mistakes. These principles create a safe space for learning and for building confidence as learners.

Another area of emphasis is updating content, but in my view, you should focus on creating new content and building a library of resources. If you deliver everything through lectures, consider expanding this. You could create podcasts, ebooks, presentations and videos. Your update process should also look at developing a range of different delivery methods.

Utilising technology is an area I am particularly passionate about. With AI-generated content now so prominent, one brilliant way to engage students is to encourage them to use this content to create their own new materials. This approach is highly effective, as it fosters peer learning and promotes the sharing of knowledge among students.

You should utilize technology when it comes to teaching materials. This is because tech teaching materials are able to help bring the most out of your lessons. You must use tools such as online platforms and Google Sheets to help your students to practise their knowledge. This is so that they would be able to do this even when they are at home. You could also use online learning platforms. This is so that they would be able to refer to the platforms when they need to refer to something for their studies.

You must always reflect and revise your teaching materials. This is so that it would be relevant with current times. You need to evaluate if your materials are able to help your students to understand your lessons or not. This is so that you would know how to change your materials accordingly. You should also revise your materials even if you still want to use the same ones. This is so that you wouldn't need to change it entirely but still be able to suit the current syllabus.

I need to work on this. When learning flops in the class, note it so you don’t do the same thing again next year. It seems hard to do in the moment, but will save so much energy over the course of your teaching career!
