Geographical - historical data
Vlachatano is located on the borders of the Municipality of Zitsa and Pogoni, south of the Monastery of Vela, between Mitsikeli and Kasidiaris[1] at an altitude of 540 meters[3]. The village is 33 kilometers NW. from the city of Ioannina and 26 km. NW. from Eleousa (seat of the municipality). Its name means station or camp of the Vlachs and according to historical information it was, until the mid-17th century, their place of residence. According to local tradition, its original location was further south where the Holy Monastery of Agia Paraskevi is located today, which dates back to 1628.
It was officially mentioned as a settlement after the liberation of Epirus in 1919 in Government Gazette 184A - 19/08/1919, designating it as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[4] According to the Kallikratis plan, it constitutes the local community of Vlachatanos of the municipal unit of Ekali, which falls under the municipality of Zitsa, and according to the 2011 census, 26 residents are listed as a community.[5]
