Just finished chapter 1 and already have a few notes!

(view spoiler)[The Jackal lacks any ounce of empathy, he is beyond cruel. Imprisoning Darrow is not enough for him, he has to put him in a tomb-like thing where he can't even stretch out. And taking his family hostage, torturing him even more with the choice of giving them up and having them killed, or staying in that tomb forever ... Despicable, really.

Quotes

"Never telling me how he discovered my secret." - How did he find out though??? I really want to know!

"There is no reason." - (Talking about how the Vale isn't real and there's no reason to struggle through the horror of life). Darrow's been in that tomb for a long time and is losing his will to live along with his sanity... He is incredibly strong for lasting so long in the first place, not taking the easy way out by giving up his family and trying to kill himself instead. Even though I don't believe that the Jackal would keep his word of putting Darrow on a nice estate etc., I think he would execute him as well, after making him watch his family dying. But being in that tomb, I don't think that Darrow would be able to think as rationally about the Jackal's motives and plans.

"If this is the end, I will rage toward it." - So much anger, so much willpower from being oppressed all his life as a Red in the mines... (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 2

(view spoiler)[That even the other Golds think the Jackal barbaric says a lot...

"His face is both heaven and hell.
To see another man...
To know I am not alone..."
I can't even imagine what it would be like to be in solitary confinement for nine months and not see a single human being for all that time.

Even though Cassius has all the reasons in the world to hate Darrow, he still shows compassion. Despite everything that happened, despite how he was raised, he is still a good man.

The scene with the Pink girl and the Jackal is just vile. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 3

(view spoiler)[Ah, Sevro <3 It is so fitting that he took up the position of Ares after his father's death. I'm sure he's enjoying it immensely lol.
And the fact that he had his Gold eyes replaced with Red ones says everything about his commitment to the cause. He is so proud to have a Red mother, to be half a Red - I don't think there would be another Gold who could feel like that. (hide spoiler)]

I started this today, through part 1 and man, (view spoiler)[Jackal is a complete psychopath, very much looking forward to his hopefully prolonged and excruciatingly painful death! Darrow & Vectra were rescued, the part ends with her joining his cause to get revenge which I cannot wait to see. Sevro is hilarious, he took his father's place as Ares and I just adore his crazy ass. Very happy to see Darrow's family is safe. Someone (Darrow hopefully) needs to get Lorn's weapon from that chick who also needs to die a painful death. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out, all of the death and destruction! Finished and I loved it, so much so that I went back and bumped up the first 2 in the series as well. (view spoiler)[RIP Ragnar :( I had a feeling Cassius was having a redemption arc for a good part of the book but when he "killed" Sevro I was like whelp that was incorrect, but it turned out it WAS correct! So happy to see Jackal and several others get murdered in the face, so deserved, especially Aja! I really enjoyed it, the action, the politics, the betrayals and the relationships. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 4-8

(view spoiler)[of course he won't leave Victra with the Jackal. And of course this is going to have really bad consequences... Poor Trigg. We got way too little time wth him. Darrow basically traded in Trigg's life for Victra's (even though he didn't mean to do that, of course).

"Evil feeds on mercy."
This is such a great quote! But it demands a price from the "Good" - if they stop being merciful, don't they become just as evil as the enemy? Or do the ends (the Greater Good) justify the means (killing)?

"I forgot how easy it is to take a life."
It was unexpected for Darrow to revoke his promise and kill Vixus. Vixus was a terrible human being, but it's still out of character for Darrow to feel nothing after killing him. It shows how much the war and the Golds have changed him already.

"It's Ares himself. My best friend in all the worlds."
This friendship is everything. Their dedication and loyalty to each other is so heartwarming <3 and Ragnar calling Darrow little brother is just as sweet!
Of course, Sevro knew that Darrow was alive, even though he was publicly executed. Of course, he never stopped looking despite everyone calling him crazy.

The reunion with Darrow and his family was adorable. Finally he gets to see them again.

It was Harmony who told the Jackal about Darrow being a Red after all!!!! I didn't think she would do that, but the reasons Darrow gives - failing to detonate the bomb on Luna and so on - make sense if you think about it. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 9-12/End of Part 1

"It's Uncle Sevro and the Moderately Friendly Giant."
This whole interaction with Sevro and Darrow's family is so funny. I don't even want to know what "presents" he brought the kids in the past lol.

And oh yeah, I forgot that the eyes were actually Darrow's, not just random Red eyes. I can't decide if that's creepy or funny.

"I'm a terrorist warlord! Stop throwing me."
Love it. The relationship between Sevro and Ragnar is so great. Probably 99.9% of other Golds would kill an Obsidian for even thinking about the things Ragnar does and says. It's so great that he feels comfortable enough to act like that around a Gold.

"I am and always have been a man who is made complete by those around him."
"I feel my soul trickling back into me as I realize I am finally home."
Thank God for Ragnar reminding Darrow who he is and why they're fighting. The hospital scene was so wholesome.

And, of course, another wonderful Sevro quote:
"No more of this anorexic scarecrow shit."

It's surprising that Victra truly doesn't care that Darrow's a Red. What she says about their right to fight and Gold's hypocrisy is so out of character and not what you'd expect from a Gold of her rank to think. (hide spoiler)]

I read this all day today... it was so good... don't even know what to say... this would have made a great end to the series, I think, if no sequel series was written...

I agree, I would have been satisfied with the ending :)

I just finished Part I --

Even with Darrow's plot armor intact, those first few chapters were difficult to read.

I'm very curious about how Severo's revelation will play out.

I'm not as disappointed in Roque as I expected. I'm angry, yes, but I'm more resigned than disappointed.

I think Roque's ultimate result fit and I was not mad about it.

I am currently reading Chapter 20, and I don't understand Sevro's attitude!

(view spoiler)[What did Darrow do to lose his trust? Was it because he was captured or because he's not invincible? Is it related to Sevro's dad not being invincible either?

I'm really confused. Why is Sevro jealous of Darrow now? I wish we could get a glimpse from his POV. (hide spoiler)]

I just finished the book. Here ere are my thoughts:

1. I did not see that ending coming.

2. I am extremely angry about what the Jackal did!

3. This would serve as a strong conclusion to the series.

4. Despite point #3, I am excited to see what happens next.

5. I agree with Severo regarding the Luna line; (view spoiler)[Almost every act of mercy has resulted in betrayal and heartache! I don’t think that kid is going to forgive and forget. (hide spoiler)]

I've taken a little break to finish some books from the library before my hold expires.

Chapters 13-18
(view spoiler)[The Howler initiation was absolutely disgusting and insane.

Darrow talking about his rescue - "Fortunately, Sevro isn't a fool." That is debatable lol.

Sevro "Ares is wise."
Victra "And a drama queen."

Victra's emotions must be all over the place, seeing what her family's company is doing to all their workers...

Darrow starting to doubt Sevro is painful ... But he is right. Sevro is driven by violence and revenge, he is not as good at clinical and strategic thinking. - "His rage a thing to move mountains."

Matteo! Poor guy, being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I hope he heals up again.

"I know death well enough to hear it gather its breath." - That is such a powerful quote! And being followed by Kavax roaring in the Telemanus way lol.

"This is the Reaper [...] who Gold cannot kill." - If most of the Golds weren't so arrogant, they would be trembling in their boots at the mere mention of Darrow's name. All the things he's already survived and achieved, despite so many people hunting and trying to kill him.

It was painful watching the Howlers turn away from Sevro and towards Darrow. The "secret seeds of self-doubt and fear" coming out, and seeing hate towards Darrow on Sevro's face...

"And as we pretend to be brave, we become so." - another really powerful quote!

I think Sevro is (view spoiler)[ pissed off, more at himself than at Darrow, because he couldn't succeed as a leader. Darrow took the position away from him in a single moment, in Quicksilver's meeting room, and he had to do it or they wouldn't have survived.
I think he's also embarrassed and worried about what all the others might think of him, now that he's "failed" so publicly, and he's taking it out on Darrow (hide spoiler)]

Question: Will we be reading Iron Gold in April?

Pierce Brown has indicated that the release of "Red God," is likely to be in the summer of 2026, though no official date has been announced.

Got that info from google AI, but also saw similar comment in a Goodreads pre-review comment...

Finally finished this one... Wow! Love the end of this book 👌

I have to ditto this... I read this a few weeks ago, and loved the reread so much... but it left me bereft and unable to string three thoughts together for weeks afterwards...

I absolutely love all the quotes your picking out, Angela! There's so many good ones in this book. I'm not surprised that most of the best ones are Sevro... IMO he steals the show here--(view spoiler)[and I also love Victra, and his & Victra's interactions. One of my favorite scenes is when Darrow is trying to figure out how to defuse a mob... and Sevro does it in a very Sevro way--by hanging himself. (hide spoiler)]

Also really agree that this would have been a spectacular ending right here... I struggled through Iron Gold and had to stop halfway through Dark Age because they're SO DARK... so part of me wants to wait for Red God. But I'm willing to go forward nowish if other folks want to... it's definitely going to take a BR to get me through the darkness.

I definitely am in the wait camp... don't want to read 1-3, then wait 1 year, it turns into 2 years, and feel the need for another re-read...

I don’t mind waiting. We’re at a good stopping point.

I am still only quarter in but guess it's good idea to wait for the final book. I just don't know if I will be able to wait after finishing book 3...

Book 3 ties things up pretty well... there's a 10+ year time jump between 3 & 4. Best place to pause, honestly--book 4, 5, and I'm guessing probably 6 all end with cliffhangers, and there's a LOT of painful scenes...

I got to from chapter 19-30 in the meantime!

The reveal that Quicksilver co-founded the Sons of Ares was wild. He is in such a high position in Society and could change so much!

Darrow talking about Sevro: "His moral creed has always been simple: protect your friends, to hell with everyone else." Similar to Darrow really - protect your friends, protect the LowColors, to hell with everyone else.

Their confrontation was difficult to read... "Stop acting like a terrorist. We're better than that." "He should be my simplest, strongest friendship. But because of loss, everything is twisted between us."
And then, of course, Sevro comes out with one of his magnificent one-liners again lol.
Darrow: "I think the shittiest part about getting old ..."
Sevro: "We're twenty-three, dipshit."
You just gotta love him lol.

In chapter 24, Mustang is FINALLY back on board! Imagining the strength of Houses Augustus, Telemanus, Arcos and Orion's fleet united. "The Society would tremble." Gave me chills.

In chapter 28, when Holiday, Ragnar, Mustang and Darrow sit together sharing a meal. "I'm struck by how natural this feels, or four worlds colliding together." That's how it should be. Just people, without Color or rank.

Chapter 29, when they discover that Cassius buried the dead Blues and Silver, it struck me once again what a shame it is that Darrow got put together with Julian in the Passage. If he had had a different opponent back then, Cassius would 100% be allied with Darrow and fighting for a better future with him. Despite all he's done, he is the most decent Gold of them all, next to Mustang.

And chapter 30 is of course Ragnar's death :( "My friend, my protector, Ragnar Volarus has left this world."
He was just too good a character to stay alive, it seems... I would have loved to see his character develop even more, see more banter, more bonding ... (hide spoiler)]

Sevro is so good! He really stole the book IMO.

Chapters 31-37

(view spoiler)[Mustang to Darrow about Ragnar "He smiled in the end. Do you know why? Because he knew what he was doing was right. He was fighting for love. You've made a family of your friends. You always have. It made Ragnar a better man to know you. So you didn't get him killed. You helped him live."
My heart ...

Ragnar's mother "Are you Ragnar's master?"
Darrow "I am his brother."
What a foreign concept in this Society, but so heartwarming <3

Darrow about Sevro
"That'd be my diminutive psychotic accomplice"
"My mangy little guardian angel"
"The Goblin King"
Accurate, lol.

When Sevro asks why Darrow didn't kill Cassius: "Maybe I think the world would be a better place with him in it. ... I want him to have a chance to decide for himself what kind of person he wants to be."
I really want them to be friends again, they worked so well together at the Institute!

"Justice isn't about fixing the past, it's about fixing the future. We're not fighting for the dead. We're fighting for the living. ... Otherwise, what's the point?
We're it. Broken and cracked and stupid as we are, we're the light, and we're spreading."

And then the section about the Jackal as a child... He just gets creepier the more we know about him. He's a perfect villain for the story. I hope we never find out what he intends to do with the nuclear warheads he stole ...

Darrow about Cassius
"I feel an ironclad kinship with this man. ... I desperately want him to be a friend again."

As for Cassian... I almost wonder if Darrow's feelings for Cassian have been amplified by his failure with Roque. Like, if they can find a way to be friends again, maybe it'll redeem that... (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 38-43
(view spoiler)["Hello, you old rusty bitch, you recall when I kidnapped your grandchild? - Why yes, my goodman. Just after I enslaved your entire race."

"Reaper's trying to speak, you shitgobblers. Besides, all this Colorism bores me." He looks around, terribly pleased with the silence. He nods to himself and waves a theatrical hand. "Reaper, please, continue. You were getting to the exciting part."

"Sevro looks so pleased he might faint."

"If the need arises I've got myself a psychotic Goblin-sized fighter jet."

Thank you for the much needed laughs, Sevro lol.

At the end of chapter 40, Mustang uses the word bloodydamn for the first time ever. It's not even acknowledged in the conversation, but it means so much!

Romulus au Raa is an interesting character.
"The Coreworlders are so desensitized to violence, they've forgotten it's to have a purpose. Violence is a tool. It is meant to shock. To change. Instead, they normalize and celebrate it."


And chapter 42 brings us Roque again.
"He is not the evil of his story. He's the hero who unmasked the Reaper."

Roque "Darrow is only who he is because of who is around him."
Mustang cheerily "Agreed"
Darrow "And I still have everyone around me, Roque. Who do you have?"

Darrow "When did I lose you?"
Roque "When Quinn died"
Darrow " You planned to kill me even when you thought I was a Gold?"
Roque "Gold. Red. It doesn't matter. Your spirit is black. ... You are ruin, Darrow. You drain your friends of life, ... convincing youself that each death is worth it."
That must hurt. It's exactly what Darrow is constantly beating himself up about and now a former friend is "confirming" it for him.

Kavax and Darrow's exchange in chapter 43 means so much <3
Darrow "The kindness... When I'm not even one of you."
Kavax "You speak like a fool. My boy made you one of us. Virginia makes you one of us. And if we damn all that, I say you're one of us. So one of us you are."
It's all I can do to keep the tears from my eyes.

It must mean so much to Darrow to have a Gold of Kavax's calibre validate and accept him, no matter what <3 (hide spoiler)]

re: Ragnar--very mild spoilers for all books--(view spoiler)[I still feel like there was some unfinished business with his storyline, that his sister doesn't fill for me... There is a character introduced in book 4 too, that almost seems like it's picking up that torch... but then it seems like in book 5 Brown changed his mind about that or something... I remember when he was writing book 6, Brown said something about "choosing the wrong path" and having to rewrite parts of the book, and I always wondered if maybe that was part of it... I really hope the Obsidians get closure of some kind in the finale though. (hide spoiler)]

I am back again with chapters 44-49! Still in the reading slump, but had a good reading day yesterday and today :)

It's kind of repetitive how they keep "shifting the paradigm" to outmanoeuvre their enemies - but at the same time it always feels fresh and exciting!

"It's not bravery, it's fear of shaming yourself in the eyes of your friends that keeps you moving."

"All this to reach a man who I could have reached out and touched the day before. If this is the cost of honor, give me a shameful murder. If I'd have stabbed Roque in the throat then, Valkyrie would not litter the ground now."
Couldn't agree more...

Darrow trying to call Mustang during the battle with Roque and not reaching her... "Stay alive. Just stay alive. Why did I ever let her out of my sight?"
That gave me a stab right to the heart.

Sefi "finding a more kindred spirit in Victra than either of them might have thought" feels very right.

"[Roque's] mind a beautiful, terrible weapon."
This shows the duality of their situation so well. He still admires Roque, and cares for him deeply, even though they're now enemies. Beautiful and terrible.

I love how the small Pink opened the Bridge for them. Of course, none of the Society Golds would pay attention to someone so irrelevant to them and that's, again, their downfall.

"Silly Poet. Haven't you wondered where Sevro is? He's about to make his entry." Victra is enjoying this so much. Those two really are a match made in heaven.
And of course Sevro is hiding in the proverbial dead horse again lol.

"Our worlds made us what we are."

Darrow talking about Victra and Roque - "How can she not see that beneath his deeds, he's a good man? He's still our friend, despite what he's done to us."
I'm not so sure about that. I wouldn't call anyone a friend who delivered me to be tortured and then stood idly by for almost a year. I get why Darrow still cares for Roque and why he is still trying to save his life. I'm just saying I wouldn't be, if I were in Darrow's shoes. He is a far better person than I am lol.

And "the Poet of Deimos takes his own life."
Here we go with the honor again. He has to kill himself to have an honorable death. I feel like the sensitive Roque would have been one of the easier people to get on Darrow's side, if he wasn't so obsessed with the honor of Gold. Who cares about honor, really... (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 50-59

The scene after Roque's funeral, when Mustang keeps repeating "It's not your fault." ... Another stab to the heart again.

Darrow and Cassius watching the Institute holos together and reminiscing felt kind of like the old days in book 1.

Cassius "All you have is thunder. All I have, lightning. [...] We can only obey what we are. Without a storm, you and I? We're just men. But give us conflict... how we rattle and roar."

Cassius "Aren't you afraid you're going to break everything and not be able to put it back together?"
Darrow "That's why I have Mustang."
Cassius "I wish it was easier to hate you."
Those two work so well together, always have.

"Some part of me has died. But when did it die? Why did I not notice?"
Oh Darrow :( He is so jaded by everything he's experienced. It's a wonder he's still as compassionate as he is, considering the circumstances.

The scene after Uncle Narol's public execution is quintessential Sevro.
"Ares, lord of this rebellion, slams down on the walkway wearing his spiked helmet of war."
"I am Ares! I am a murderer too!"
And then hanging himself in front of 25 000 people. So overly dramatic, but very effective nonetheless. I bet he enjoyed the performance that came before the hanging part lol.

Darrow talking about Cassius being hanged - "They do not know the spirit in Cassius, the nobility [...] They see a monster."
"I see a man trying his best in a world that doesn't give a shit. It breaks my heart."


The scene after the whole ordeal, with Mustang and Sevro, was so so heartwarming.
"The compliment of silence is as deep a one as she can give, and Sevro favors her with a rare un-ironic smile."

And of course Victra proposing to Sevro and the whole wedding!
"It's the cleanest I've ever seen Sevro."
"I've never seen Sevro so happy."
"The gentleness I see from the raging woman now is all it takes to know how much she loves him."
"Like she sees Sevro as a refuge, a place where she can be safe."
"But you're a Julii" - "Yesterday I was. Today I'd rather be a Barca."


When they go to get Cassius out of prison and safely of the ship.
Potential spoilers for rest of book
(view spoiler)[I seem to remember that it was only a ruse that Cassius betrayed them, so they could trick Antonia. Am I remembering wrong?? Two chapters later, there's still no sign of it being a ruse, but I keep remembering it... (hide spoiler)]
Cassius apologizing for killing Fitchner and extending his hand to Sevro - "This does not come easy for [Sevro]. He's never been a gentle soul."


"These are the killers of my time. Their arrogance drips from them. As they look at me, it isn't hate I see in their violent eyes, but a fundamental absence of empathy."
Psychopaths one and all. Chilling.

"The Jackal is wearing Fitchner's rib cage."
And here we have Psychopath number one.

"Like Mustang said, we're just sacks of meat to him."
"It's terrifying to see the cult he's built around himself. He's taken bits of me, of my speaking pattern, and transposed it onto his own behavior. He continues to evolve."

I can't even begin to express how creepy the Jackal is to me. He really is the perfect villain. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 60 - End

Thank God I remembered correctly that the whole thing was a ruse. They had me worried for a second there lol.
Sevro waking up from the coma was the funniest thing.
"I'm going to kill you in your face!"
"He kisses her nose."
"Nah, prolly not." And chops off Aja's head.


"And I feel nothing but dread, because the Jackal has begun to laugh."
Oh boy. Thank God he died in the end.
Mustang "He's not [mad]. I could forgive him if he were mad."

Lysander is a really remarkable child. After witnessing all of this violence and the death of people he cared about, he is still able to think clearly and discuss tactics with the enemy. I don't know if that says more about him as a person or more about how and by whom he was raised.

Darrow "I love you all. No matter what happens."
Sevro "Even Cassius?"
Cassius "Especially me, today."
I love it when they are all together and joking around like this.

"Mustang looks at me. This is a moment she never wanted. But she accepts it as her burden just as I have accepted mine as Reaper."
"Only together can we bind these people. Only together can we bring peace."
"No Gold will be the first to bend. I could make them. But better I bend for them."
And Cassius and Sevro bending as well. It is so fitting for Mustang to become the Sovereign. She was made for it, the diplomacy, the politics, the compassion for everyone.
I love that she immediately disbanded the Board of Quality Control and pursued all the people for crimes against humanity.

The Jackal's execution must have been hard on her. And still, she showed him compassion and gave him a quicker and less painful death at the end, even though he did nothing to deserve it.

Cassius saying goodbye and calling Darrow brother again for the first time since the Institute - it warmed my heart.

"If pain is the weight of being, love is the purpose."

Mustang naming their son Pax was the final nail in my coffin and made me tear up...

Acknowledgements
Usually I only skim over this part of a book, but this time I actually read it.

"Darrow wasn't the focus anymore. It was the people around him."

"My foreign publishers for their tireless efforts in trying to translate Bloodydamn or ripWing or anything Sevro says."
Even in the acknowledgements, Sevro is still giving us much needed laughs lol. (hide spoiler)]

So many good quotes and moments there!! I especially feel the Roque bits. And the Sevro bits. And Cassius bits!

When we are reading Iron Gold?

Most folks were in favor of waiting until Red God has a release date, before jumping into the follow-ups... this is the best stopping place. From what I remember, the next books all stop in very dark places.

I saw that too though, you just know there will be a stupid cliffhanger if it is 2 books for the finale.....

Heh, from what I remember of Iron Gold and half of Dark Age I read, they are all stupid cliffhangers. Like, book 2 level or worse.

Dark Age was so painful (for characters--good story though) that I couldn't finish... I was reading it when the next one hadn't been published yet... I either need friends to rage with or (preferably) just wait until the conclusion is in print...

I think the books are riddled with trips to the outer rim past the asteroid belt, and other planets in general, so there's always something to aim for at the end of each book, from spoilers I skimmed?

I am somewhat okay with stupid cliffhangers if I only need to wait a month to continue lol
