4.5 STARS

Amor Towles has done it again! He has written a compelling story that drew me in immediately and kept me keeping pace with our young adventurers on their road trip. There were detours, escapades, interesting encounters- the stuff of life!!

The characters are what makes this book so memorable. Firstly, we meet Emmett, 18 yrs old. Just released from a work camp, he wants to start a new life away from his past. He is honourable and trustworthy- the quiet, silent type. Billy, his 8 yr old brother, is smart as a whip. There is a magical quality to him that makes even strangers pay attention. Their plans are derailed when Duchess and Woolley enter upon the scene. They escaped form the work camp and want Emmett to join them in their quest for riches in New York. Woolley is sweet and innocent and very trusting. He needs protection from himself as well as those around him. Duchess is our con man. Wrongly put in camp, he wishes to seek out those that harmed him. Much as he is a scoundrel, you can’t help being moved by his past history and his thoughtfulness towards Woolley.

Much happens on this road trip. This is 1954- no cell phones or GPS- just maps! I don’t miss trying to read a map, I must say.

There are some very memorable secondary characters: Sally, Emmett and Billy’s closest neighbour, who feels invested in their future; Ulysses, a man that Billy and Emmett meet and Billy’s book that is referred to frequently-Compendium of Heroes, Adventurers, and Other Intrepid Travellers.

What prevented me from giving this book an outright 5 stars was the ending. I didn’t believe an event that occurred as it didn’t seem in keeping with Emmett’s character. I know a book cannot go on forever, but their were a couple of loose ends I would have liked to have seen tied up.

Overall, I loved this book and this journey that I took with all these memorable characters.

Angela M Fabulous review, Antoinette. I didn’t find the event believable either and I keep meaning to reread that ending to see if I missed something. These characters !

Antoinette Thanks so much, Angela. I loved these characters. A very special book.

Jennifer Welsh I wish I’d loved this as much as you did, Antoinette. It was so promising at the start, but I think it lost me much earlier than it did you. He hasn’t lost me as an author, though. Terrific review :)

Antoinette Sorry to hear you did not love it as much, Jennifer. Sometimes, timing is everything, at least for me. I can’t believe I still haven’t read his first book- must prioritize it!

Diane Barnes Road trip extraordinaire! I completely fell in with them all the way, but agree, the ending did seem a bit odd.

Antoinette I used to love road trips!! Now I get too stiff if I’m sitting too long. Haha. Glad you enjoyed this one as well, Diane.

Mark Porton "Smart as a whip" - I might steal that one Antoinette - hey, this is a terrific review. I must say though, this has received mixed reviews from the reviews I've encountered. This is on my (wooden) bookshelf and I need to pick it up - isn't Towles a wonderful author? I agree with you about missing maps - there was a certain knack in being able to fold them back up wasn't there. But Google Maps is good methinks - Great review.

ps. I was just about nervous about this as I really didn't like On the Road by Kerouac - so read mu and road trips dont really mix (in books or real life for that matter)

Kimber Silver What a fantastic review, Antoinette! I'm glad that Towles has done it again. This sounds like a great adventure story.
I don't miss reading maps. ;-)

Antoinette I must admit, Mark, I have not read On the Road, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be anything like it. There really is a magical quality to this story thanks to Billy. Thanks for your lovely comment.

Antoinette Thanks so much, Kimber! It is a true adventure story. I don’t know what I’d do without GPS. I have no sense of direction.

Lori Keeton So glad you enjoyed this one, Antionette! I can’t wait to see what Towles writes next!

Antoinette Thanks, Lori! I still have to get back to his first book!

Margaret M - (having a challenging time and on GR as much as I can) Terrific review Antionette 💖

Antoinette Thanks, Margaret.
