did not like it

I wanted to like this book and I am sure for most this book is inspirational and empowering. I agree with her core message, I just found the whole book annoying. I can’t put my finger on it.

Lauren I didn't feel that way at first but I'm halfway through and we're going in circles.

Pocket Watch Purveyor Smug, sanctimonious and tedious. The last half of the book is unbearable.

Laura Kanalas It was very choppy. A few antidotes and a self help meme thrown in.

Shannon S Just another pompous social justice warrior giving the world a lecture.

message 5: by Dawn (new)

Dawn I felt the same way. I made it 47% of the way through and then had to stop. It was annoying. I live in a different world than the author.

message 6: by Amy (new) - rated it 1 star

Amy I felt similar when I read the Rachel Hollis books.

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I felt the same...same message over and over

Camden Morgante Very self-righteous and smug. She says her truths are only hers, and not necessarily right for everyone. Then why write a book to convince others of your “truths”?

Greta Sutherland Catchphrases. 😐

Christina Pilkington I completely agree! I’m almost done and can’t wait to be finished. It feels very confused. A hot mess.

message 11: by Amy (new) - rated it 2 stars

Amy Large TOTALLY agree. I also can't articulate what is so annoying about Glennon Doyle, but there's definitely something.

Elisabeth Bialosky Completely agree and glad it wasn't just me. Also partly because she rated her own book as five stars on goodreads....

message 13: by Lisa (new) - rated it 1 star

Lisa Marie Amen!!!!! Exactly how I felt as I hate read the last half of this book.

Nuala I think I can put my finger on it..... she’s obsessed with herself. I, I, I, me, me, me, I, me, me, I, me, me. “I’m sure I’ve got it right this time, listen to me!”
And she may be right about some concepts, but they’re not original and really grate on your nerves when they’re illustrated by endless stories from her about herself.

Rachek I completely agree! The book is annoying, though I can't pin point why.

Samantha Weinberg It may be that as a strong, independent, secure women it is easy to see right through this book. Her philosophy of becoming whole is her journey back from brokenness. I can’t relate at all.

message 17: by Emma (new) - rated it 3 stars

Emma Hill Agreed

message 18: by Emma (new) - rated it 3 stars

Emma Hill I blame all the extended metaphors and speaking in continuous allegories

Bana AZ Same. I couldn't even finish it. I'm so surprised that so many people gave this 5-stars

message 20: by Berfu (new) - rated it 1 star

Berfu Agreed! I couldn't put my hand on it until you said it. This book literally annoyed me! :)

message 21: by Kelly (new) - rated it 1 star

Kelly Kelly this comment is so on point! I love Glennon as a person and support her missions but I listened to this on audio - and I couldn't get through chapter 2

message 22: by Cindy (new) - rated it 1 star

Cindy Robinson Girl yes me too!!! Some of these other reviews NAILED it though...

message 23: by Warda (new) - rated it 1 star

Warda You’re spot on. I felt bad initially as surely all the messages are good right? We wanna hear positive messages reiterated. But that’s not all she does. It bothered me to hear the all the “preach” with such a limited world-view, with derivative metaphors and philosophies (with no reference or credit to well known practices and teachings).

message 24: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Crum SAME. So wanted to love it. Couldn’t connect with it and didn’t finish it.

Shelley This is me. I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth finishing or just chuck it in the “DNF” shelf and return it to the library

message 26: by Jana (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jana I at first thought this is going to be good but now half way I can't stop cringing with each page.

Lindsay Yeah, the whole book all I can think is stop trying to make "fetch" happen, except it's "Knowing" and "the Ache". I'm going to finish it because my neighbor gave it to me and I love her but, honestly, BARF. It's just another self help book telling us what we already know. From the perspective of another privileged white woman. I say this as another priviliged white woman but I have learned to listen to the unheard rather than speak on their behalf.

Jennifer Mennella Same. Some good quotes but a struggle to finish

message 29: by Selah (new) - rated it 1 star

Selah Agreed.

Laura Kendall It's the unacknowledged white privilege.

Vitoria Machado I thought I was the only one with this impression. But I’m relieved this wasn’t the case. I couldn’t wait to get it over with. I get her point but I disagree with many of them (even if I’m progressive) and hated the way she structures the story.

message 32: by Olea (new) - rated it 2 stars

Olea Exactly!!

message 33: by Sara (new) - rated it 1 star

Sara agreed! I believe it’s full of good quotes, but it’s definitely all I do not finish shelf. I think the more annoying part is that there’s no chronological setting or point. It’s kind of all over the place and it’s just her ranting or being self-righteous.

message 34: by Emily (new) - rated it 1 star

Emily Same, I hated it lol. It seemed like an entire book of someone tooting their own horn by recalling totally unrealistic conversations that we're supposed to believe actually happened. Like okay you think you're god, WE GET IT! Hahaha

Miquael I seriously feel the exact same way! I’m not sure what it was… I can’t really grasp the whole object of the book… but I also kept saying to myself this is HER MEMOIR. Idk. I wanted to DNF it, but I got through it.

Meghan Finley Limping along. Almost finished. I wish her well but I think she has more work to do before her next “memoir.”
