There were five things I had to get past to allow myself to enjoy this book
-it is not the kind of fantasy i wanted. don't go into this thinking you're gonna get some cool, intelligent Graceling-esque story. this series has more in common with KMM's Fever than anything else
-the writing had my internal red pen twitching. so many unnecessary words and descriptions of clothing!
-there's heaps of cheesy sex that are unequivocally not YA. i mean, yay sex positivity. boo, cock in an erotic sense in a book for young readers.
-Feyre is super annoying
-the names SUCK. THEY ARE SO ANNOYING. every fucking time Rhysand got shortened to Rhys, it took me out of the story. Feyre (FAY-RUH) does not work spelt like that. neither of those names do. Rhysand (if we go with the proper Rhys pronunciation) sounds likes Reason. it reads like Rice-and. but then when it's shortened. idk
-also, since Prythia and Hybern are clearly alt versions of Britain and Ireland, well, i don't buy Hybern is gonna be the invading country. look how tiny it is! also, history.
i think that was more than five.
but once i got over those things, it was ok.
i like Rhysand as a love interest. i especially liked the emphasis on Feyre finding a solid support system in his court and the emphasis on how it was totally right for her to leave the suffocating relationship with Tamlin and first love doesn't have to be the only love.
i guess some of the supporting characters were cool
anyway, idk. it is what it is and i will for sure read the next one. but lets not dress it up, people. this ain't no high quality fantasy series.

if it was fic, it would be torn apart. but people love it because it's sj maas. idgi!

yeah, i kinda very much respect how it's unapologetically OTT. Every one and every thing is so fucking extra and once i got into that, it was a trip

I think the first one had more weight behind it with Feyre's family stuff, whereas this felt really shallow. (and the endless pointless descriptions of clothes etc did not help)

also, i felt like the switch to rhysand (who i actually quite liked) felt contrived. i kept feeling like feyre/SJM was convincing me why rhysand>tamlin... instead of it happening organically. i dislike when characters change that drastically, that quickly. it makes me not trust the author.
