This is among the best webtoons I have come across, It's a bit too refined for this format and fits in with the finest Graphic Novels I have read.
The story revolves around a barbarian with herculean strength coming to civilization, discovering new gods, and finding a place for himself in this medical society. There is a depth to the storytelling, and it could have been a long epic tale, but seems to have been dropped midway. Still, it was not rushed and we do get a complete ending. The story does bear a resemblance with Conan the Barbarian just less fantasy.
The Art is the highlight here, be it the drawing, colours or illustrations they are perfect.
Sadly, the series got dropped, maybe it was not suitable for the webtoon format. ...more

The review is for 27 Volumes having 1442 Chapters, the original work is in a Chinese Web Novel, I read a mediocre fan translation of the same.
The book does a great job of world-building and creating interesting lore, the story is engaging with political and business backstabbing and lots of twists and turns. It even has a real set of characters having their unique traits and growth throughout the storytelling, this depth in characters felt way different from your normal Xuanhuan-themed books out there.
Still, it fails miserably when it comes to writing; a few of the issues were – 1) I don’t expect fan translations to be good, but this one was a pain to read 2) The story could have easily been cut in half without loss, much of the theme is a repetition of one collage competition after another just getting bigger in scale. 3) The deeper themes and lores were touched upon but not explored, the cube's background and history left a lot of unexplored answers.
Also, the ending was just rushed and summarized, at least they ended it in a satisfying manner. ...more

The book revolves around a dystopian world where grounded humans constantly fight against aliens in space, all the fights happening up in the air in fighter jets making the pilots the heroes in the society. This is the story of Spensa, a young girl fighting against all odds to carve a name for herself among these high flyers. I enjoyed her characterization and her sense of grandeur.
Did feel the book lacked in terms of twists and worldbuilding both stuff Sanderson is known for. Can be argued it is for YA audience but then I do feel it is inferior to Enders Game. As for the AI ships angel, it's again inferior to Ancillary Justice. Still a solid read, I did finish it in one sitting. ...more
Time traveling to the Ancient Mediterranean and competing with Rome, Carthage, Sparta, and the likes of Persia for the domination of the Western worldTime traveling to the Ancient Mediterranean and competing with Rome, Carthage, Sparta, and the likes of Persia for the domination of the Western world, we get tons of Kingdom building and Strategic Army Battles in this work.
I loved the concept of the book and the author did seem to have researched the subject with lots of historical summaries thrown in for some knowledge lessons. The protagonist seems realistic, he doesn't come equipped with special powers or is a super genius, he just seems to be a guy from modern society using prior knowledge of the time period and common sense for future tech in the coming years to build a society mirroring Rome.
What I did have problems with were the overdrawn battle sequences. Initially they were fun, but when you have so many battles and they all play out almost the same with the main protagonist sitting in the capital, there is no emotional investment if few soldiers die. The other bad part was I had to read over half of the novel with botched translations, this spoils the experience.

This is the sixth book I have read by the author, him being my favorite for the Xianxia/cultivation genre, although this one is more of a Wuxia genre. The book stands out from his other books in being more laid back and less grand, but nonetheless a refreshing entertaining read. As the book covered a different genre from his usual trope we were offered something new while having his quality of writing supported by a good translation.
The book has Epic world-making, and I am a fan of the weak character becoming overpowering, another thing I liked was the non-harem world. We have plenty of fun adventures making for a light read.
If this were one of the first books of the cultivation genre I had read, I would give it a 5 on 5, being binge-reading the genre for the last three years now, 4 on 5 seems appropriate. ...more

While the genre suffers from relative plotlines and extended lengths of books, this book stands out by being nonrepetitive and ending early.

I am a big fan of second chances and leveling style novels in recent years, but most of them out there really suffer from bad translations or get too nationalist or just plain repetitive.
This one is well translated and ends in just 300 chapters. It gets everything right for the genre while skipping over all the pitfalls. There are no innovative ideas or anything to set it apart from other novels of the genre but there is also nothing that's really annoying making you want to drop it....more

The review is for all the 592 chapters at which point the author took a leave from writing due to illness.
The book starts off slow but it is well written making it a enjoyable read, the initial part is the protagonist getting used to the world, and building a foundation for himself. Lots of world-building with a storyline full of intriguing and adventure. The next phase is the initial time in the military, again a great read with the strategic battles and innovation of new tactics. But once our protagonist is in a powerful position, the book is just plain boring. I was just skimming over them as the writing was plain boring with no excitement.
Would say the first 250-300 chapters are a 5/5, last 250 chapters are a 1/5.

The review is for all the 1167 chapters. As with most web novels, the characters are flat, the author is obviously a novice, and the translation by a fan only makes it worse. I stuck to the work as enjoyed the genre and would give the first half of the book a 3/5.
The second half is unreadable, the ultra-detail it gets into on useless stuff made me quit the book multiple times. Had to skim over chapters or skip ones where no plot progression was made. Did like the ending the author came up with, it is unique.

The review is for all 10 books comprising 1463 chapters.
The initial 1/5th of the book is a real fun read, lot of gaming elements and a nice twist in the MMORPG genre. There are a lot of pages wasted on the status page/character info which I scrolled over, but the overall character development and story arcs were fun and engaging. A solid 4/5 rating.
The rest of the 4/5th book is very repetitive. What the web novel stands out in the genre for is having a coherent storyline and characterization right till the end, the world-building is huge and well thought out, all the plots and subplots get realized, none of the minor characters forgotten, just the whole process is very repetitive. Not entraining at all, I was literally just scrolling over the wring as the plot progress was so very slow. A 2.5/5 rating.

It stands out among the Chinese series in having a magic flintlock plot, actual characterization, and a non-wuxia world-building. I liked it a lot and was hooked all the way to the last 100-200 chapters. The story became torturous to read in the end and took me over a few months and a lot of willpower to complete.
The book is worth diving into and would rate it as 5/5 for 90% of the content. The last 10% is not even worth reading. ...more

The book stands out in the Chinese Web NoveWuxia/Xianxia world with a little more mature outlook and world-building
The review is for all 915 Chapters
The book stands out in the Chinese Web Novel world in that it has all the Wuxia/Xianxia elements but it takes a different tangent on them. In a world of cultivation, the protagonist wants to be a framer instead of a fighter. There is the ghost grandfather present but instead of being a helper, he seems to be a bad guy. The protagonist's sword brother seems more like the MC than the farmer loving MC.
The starting is really slow with the effort put into creating the unique world. It is boring and at times frustrating reading experience especially considering the weird new terminology of the cultivation system used in this world. Once you get over the initial wall of new terms, you really start appreciating the world-building. The different races, the mystery surrounding the protagonist's past really adds more dimensions to the storytelling. By the time we get to the tail end of the book, it starts dragging again with the overlong fight sequences, and then we have an abrupt ending.
Another point the book stand out on is the characterization, the characters are wooden but realistic. There are no silly boss men or ingrained evil guy or the harem collectors in here.
This was a fun read, at times funny, at times boring but satisfying none the less. ...more

While the author has a cool vision the story itself is straightforward and the storytelling too dated and dragging. Felt the book could have done with an editor. Loved the protagonist and his characterization, easily one of the most hilarious guy I have come across. I must have chuckled out loud many a time while reading his antiques and shenanigans. The books got a great plot, world-building, characters and pacing. The humour and fast past paced action make for a page-turner. The first action sequence was one of the best I have read, heroic, gory and intense.
Like other thick books in the genre, it does not feel repetitive even while being so, as they use repetitive stuff in cracking jokes instead of the overall plotline.
This is one of the books I might take up again for a re-read. ...more

The review is for all the 590 chapters published and then the book was dropped. I thought the book to be completed only to find that it was left in middle with the author moving on to another project, this is really pissing off and I have deducted a star in my rating cause of that.
The book is set in a medieval world, the way of warfare is melee, with blade masters and sword saints being the powerhouses, the world is enveloped in a power struggle. Our protagonist is a reincarnated guy from a modern world, this is his journey using ideas from the future to rise from a Baron’s exiled son to being a Duke to being the foremost authority in the world.
The book is a fun read, does get repetitive by the time it ends, would give it a 3 star normally if not for it being incomplete. ...more

I had been really enjoying the series and this book has all the ingredients which made the previous books (To Honor You Call Us, For Honor We Stand a success, the problem is it has them in uneven quantity. The overall plot hardly moves instead we have too much focus on space battles, terminology and slangs, I could skim over them and skip out chapters without missing out on anything. While the previous book covered the entire trope associated with military sci-fi, the plot was missing the Awe factor, there was not enough of Aliens and the writing style just was too simple without bringing out any emotions, this time around they make up for it with flying colors.
Still, I did have few other complaints, the space action had too much jargon making me want to skimp over them and the ending diplomacy subplot felt stretched. The banter between the captain and the doctor at times felt forced but still, it was full of humor.

This is probably the most complete book I have read in the genre having all the trope associated with military sci-fi, it’s got space battles, up-close melee fights and grand strategy, there are heroic deeds and cowardice acts, espionage and cat and mouse games.
The writing itself is simple and the plot doesn’t offer much twist or amazement factor but what it does give us is storytelling with a realistic gritty tale of valor. Liked the way it goes into the small everyday working of the ship from all angles.

The book is a fantasy take on Chinese history at the start of the twentieth century, what if the people had magical powers and it’s usage in warfare. The book is divided into three very different parts.
4/5 – The First Part I liked the start, it’s slow but immersing. The world-building, inkling of magic, and the character development of our main protagonist are done up well. I am always a sucker for stories based in academies/schools.
2/5 – The second part Most of it was a drag, like the trench lines in WW1 nothing much happens, we are just sitting for things to spark off. Finally, at the end when we get a picture of events, the atrocities committed seem too dark and unrealistic, the writing felt too inhuman. I was forced to look up the actual history of the events it’s based on, The Rape of Nanking, the findings left me shell-shocked that such grim stuff actually happened in real life, that too in the 20th century. While the writing really portrays the picture of the brutal scenes it is just not to my taste.
4/5 – The third part The story really comes on its own, there is continuous progress in the flow of events, clear-cut fantasy, and a build-up to what is to come.
This book is supposed to be a military fantasy and it does revolve around the theme but I felt it didn’t do justice to it. ...more
