It's for kids (I think it was given to me because the protagonist's name is my name, which NEVER happens) but it was still cute and entertaining, all the little creatures of the forest were very adorable! I'm actually least interested in Hannah, who is apparently the main focus. But I like the other ladies and actually wish I could learn more about the romances of the dwarf and the smidgen (sorry, I'm bad with names). The action scenes are sometimes confusing, and I like some of the artists more or less than others. All in all though, still pretty entertained!...more

It's the story (or the description, I guess) of a hunter/gatherer society that lives in what was Northern California, in a post-nuclear war future. Written as a collection of anthropological notes by an observer in the present. It's a history of a community that hasn't happened yet. (That doesn't really make sense, but it also doesn't have to.) There are descriptions of their lives; and one long narrative of a particular person, split into three parts; excerpts of plays; poetry (I really like their poetry!); etc. There's an appendix and I really liked that a lot, too. It's a somewhat utopian society, and it's pretty lovely to read about. There is a computer left over from the old days, but the people rarely consult it. They grow food in gardens and orchards, and hunt game, and get their energy from the sun. I would really like to live there.
On a personal note, I started reading this book in mid-July. About a month later, I was suddenly presented with the opportunity to go to Northern California myself, and I did so, whilst still reading this book. I ended up spending about a month on a mountain above the Mad River. At the time, I compared the maps in this book with current maps, and determined that I was just one (1) river valley over from the Na River, where most of the book takes place. This is amazing and serendipitous and wonderful. Just now I was comparing maps to confirm which river was which, and now I think I'm mistaken, and the Na River is the former Napa River. But still! It was cool to be in the area that I was reading about. To be living in the past of this book....more

I had read the original series (this is a manga spin-off I guess, told from the perspective of a different character) which was only okay, so I don't know what I was expecting.
I don't think the manga format lends itself well to this story. How can you tell average-looking people from pretty-but-all-the-same people in manga? You can't, really. Everybody in manga looks like a whacked version of real life. ...more

Ryan North is a genius. So are the artists; I can tell exactly what crazy shapes Jake is making, how people are saying stuff, etc. Just . . . this thing is the best. There's an introduction where he talks about how there's a lot of alliteration in the original text, and then the text uses a lot of alliteration, so that was okay with me. I like alliteration, it's one of my favorite literary techniques.
The narration was good as well. (Although Mr. Hanks says "AHF-ter" in a weird faux-British way, though everything else was in an American accent; that was odd.) He makes it sound like an epic poem -- as does the translation, which is somewhat stilted, but I LIKE that in something like this. Very bassy and whatnot. Very regal. I liked it.
That Beowulf sure is an arrogant dude, though. "I am Beowulf, I am the best! Here, let me attempt to slay this dragon all by myself, even though I'm hella old and a bunch of warriors are right here behind me!" Whatever dude.
