I listened to this novel and I do feel that a free verse novel deserves to be read in print. There were so many times as I listened that I wondered how the words were arranged on the page. Book Club will be discussing this one soon and I'm eager to hear how the students liked it.

Students recommended this novel and I was eager to read it. I can understand why they enjoyed it. A group of smart, justice-seeking children risk their freedom to head back into a plantation to save others. As an adult reader, I found the idea of a quest too simplistic. While I am sure the author did not intend to treat escaping from slavery like a game, I could not reconcile the children's attitudes with the extreme danger they were in. (Maybe it was the narration? Some of the character's voices were irksome)
