The Moon is rising as the focus shifts to Moon Knight's fellow Khonshu devotee, Hunter's Moon!

The past comes back to bedevil Moon Knight as he pursues his latest enemy — someone both familiar and new. From grim New York nights to the blazing sun of Alexandria days, Moon Knight hunts for answers among the graves of Hart Island — all the while haunted by the last mission of the Karnak Cowboys, a mercenary crew counting among its members Marc Spector, Jean-Paul Duchamp, Robert Plesko…and Layla El-Faouly! But while Moon Knight is left dealing with apocalyptic events, what of Hunter’s Moon? Khonshu’s other faithful Fist leads new converts to war, but how exactly was his most recent resurrection flawed — and does this new weakness spell doom for Dr. Badr?

4.25 stars. Man, what a story. This book was action packed and everyone was on their A-Game. MacKay with the writing down to all the artist involved. MK is desperately trying to get to the Black Specter to stop his plan to destroy Manhattan. Or better yet, having Manhattan destroy itself. Black Specter has assembled a myriad of foes to throw at MK. But Moony has Hunters Moon and others to help. MacKay wrote MK as such a badass and he was in here kicking ass as both Moon Knight and Marc Spector in the flashbacks. We also get Layla from the MCU first appearance in the comics in this volume. This all built up to one hell of an ending. That last page turn got me a bit emotional as it was a great touch. Curious as hell as to where we go from here.

Here goes the last volume of Marvel’s best book for over a year straight. This Moon Knight run has been great, and though Mackay will continue in Vengeance of the Moon Knight, you never know what a new series might hold. Solid ending to a great run, hope the next one is just as good.

I can't really get into the why's/wherefore's of this Volume without a whole bunch of Spoilers.
So I won't.
30 issue run..came down to this fitting climax with Marc tangling with Black Spectre and Zodiac..
I have enjoyed this series...and it makes me want to read an earlier incantation of MK..
The last page shows there's more to come ...

Moon Knight is hands down the best series in Marvel/Disney right now. Great artwork, great story, great characters, and toughness. This series has it all.

Moon Knight has made a lot of progress. His other personalities are in order, and he has friends and family and is in a relationship. However, the Black Spectre (a ghost from his past) has come to destroy Moon Knight, everything he stands for, and everyone who stands with him. He will use all the villains from Moon Knights past and present to do it, including the maniacal Zodiac. Can Moon Knight and him mission survive this?

I have loved every volume/issue of this series, and this book does not disappoint. I need to know what happens next. This series has catapulted Moon Knight to my favourite Marvel comic character. The book finishes with a thumbnail cover gallery.

A superb conclusion that pulls together Jed MacKay’s run of Moon Knight into a satisfying finale for the Midnight Mission. Here is a story about hope and redemption that ideally won’t be retconned anytime soon.

peak fiction: legacy

(I was gonna start writing real reviews for the run again when this team stopped putting out the zenith of fiction, but by now we all know they don't miss frfr)

I enjoyed this Moon Knight run, overall. Though toward the end of this run, things didn’t seem as street-level as I like them to be and the greater scale threat was just an okay read. This volume very much so acts as a bridge from one ending of a story to another beginning.

A bit disappointed by this rather banal ending, considering what has gone before. It lacks panache, an unattainable goal with such a cheesy villain.

It's not all bad, but I'd hoped for something a bit less mundane and a bit more flamboyant.

Well, this has certainly been a good Moon Knight run. The last two volumes were not quite as good as the first 3. I am looking forward to seeing what happens with Moon Knight and crew after this ending. Honestly, if this one wasn't the final volume of the first arc and didn't end on such a downer I probably would have gave five stars. Still very good though.

Really excellent finale for this run, a lot of the threads from across the whole run came together in some brilliant writing. A very emotional payoff and it has solidified this run as a favourite of mine.

I was under the impression all the trade titles in this run were Ramones songs, so clearly I need to track this one down. The reveal of the nemesis' identity was underwhelming; the subsequent flip back to flipping Zodiac felt like a hedged bet; and I much prefer MacKay's killings of main characters who definitely can't just come back to life this time, no sirree, when they're accompanied by more of a wink to camera. But even considered as a slightly awkward inflection point, this remains part of a top-notch run on one of my favourite superheroes, and the mix of feels, lunacy and of course ultraviolence is still strong.

Moon Knight, Volume 5 ends what is certainly in the running for the best Moon Knight saga yet.

I won't lie, there are a few stumbles here and there; this fifth volume struggles to live up to an incredibly strong start (I think we were in double-digit single issues before we finally hit a low point in this run) that had me wow'ing and gushing at every turn. One of the great successes of MacKay's soon-to-be legendary run is how he was able to reconcile a convoluted character history with a brand new story with a fantastic new crew of supporting characters.

Unfortunately, they don't get a whole lot to do here. Dr. Badr has consistently been my absolute favorite new inclusion but he gets so few opportunities to shine as brightly as he should as Hunter's Moon. And while this is far from the worst female characters have ever been treated in comics, it is bizarre that Tigra gets sat in the kiddie corner by such a banal obstacle and Reese is grounded and forced to mind the Midnight Mission - a sentient haunted house that can take care of its own damned self. Also, Zodiac's bling is incredibly cringe. Really, Zodiac is the weakest part of the entire run. I think we're going for campy, but it just feels strained. Throw in a weak ending reveal and a character "death" that we all know means nothing, and its a somewhat disappointing ending to a brilliant run.

Still, despite these gripes, Jed is a great storyteller and kept me invested throughout. Despite how eye-rolling any "Death of Comic Book Character" inherently is because we know there's no way they'll stay dead (and Moon Knight is particularly noted for being frequently resurrected), the death damned near brought a tear to my eye as Jed pays off some genuinely affecting interpersonal relationships. Moon Knight throughout this run has helped people, given them purpose, been the hero certain people needed in a way that genuinely wouldn't feel right for other heroes (okay, maybe Daredevil could tread some similar ground).

While the art can be a bit uneven in places, I won't lie, Cappuccio and Sabbatini make these issues absolutely come alive with no small amount of help from Rosenberg's INCREDIBLE use of colors. Several panels make me feel like I am seeing Moon Knight the way he was always meant to be seen for the very first time and it can be downright glorious.

Ultimately, Last Days of Moon Knight does its best with a "Death of" storyline and succeeds through the eye rolls. Elevated by its art and held up by the incredible foundation Jed MacKay built, I look forward to seeing how Marc comes back no matter how many times I'm told "no for real he's really dead this time guys."

Wow. What a build up to a battle...

This is the end of MacKay's run on MK. 30'ish issues is a LOT if you aren't a mainstream Marvel title.
They've pushed a lot of boundaries on this one. Introduced a 2nd Fist of Khonshu, made MK a protector (using the historic 'Midnight Mission' concept), and even gave Tigra something to do.

Now? They fight for the city before the (3rd) Black Spectre unleashes forces that will level everything. Just have to make it past Zodiac and a fairly infinite goon squad. Good thing MK always has that resurrection card on the table, right? He always comes back no matter how many times he dies.

It'll be...wha...wait. What do you mean Khonshu is imprisoned and mostly powerless now? He can't come back? Oh, crap.

That changes EVERYTHING.
==========
Epic end to Mackay's run. Loved the story build up. Even having missed huge chunks of MK history, they fill in the gaps quickly and neatly. Man, I can't wait to see where this goes.

There is so much to like about this. MacKay clearly has done his research and has really brought out Moon Knight's Rouge's Gallery better than any writer before. His treatment of 8-Ball in particular was refreshing (perhaps a slightly redesigned uniform is in order for this character though). It is only slightly annoying that he can't do the same for Marc's traditional support cast who are nearly absent from from this volume - although as a Tigra fan I am so glad she is being used here. The art is also amazing and perfect for the story and character.

However, this includes my most hated trope in comics - the killing off of the main character. It is lazy, derivative and boring. As I type this I am aware that Moon Knight has been announced as coming back already, so that is a saving grace. I also believe that one of my all time favourite barley used characters will be donning the cowl before then, so I guess I will read the next volume.

This was an okayish read and pretty much brings all the arcs together and I loved the 25th issue and its like one of the best standalone issues I have read, I love the switchback between the 2 timelines and then there is the stuff with him fighting against this new Black spectre and the gauntlet that he has thrown at MK, from Vibro to Sarnak and even a segment with Jigsaw, and some of them get redemptive story like Vibro and I love it, plus MK vs Black spectre and who he turns out to be, its a fun reveal and ties a lot of fun together and gives you an emotional climax which was really well done and shows you what MK means to the different characters that have been introduced in this run and is kind of an emotional high and really great send-off! I loved that ending and I am excited to see what comes next and whats next for the Midnight Mission!

Moon Knight Vol. 5: The Last Days of Moon Knight
By Jed Mackay

Firstly. Man, Jed Mackay really wrote of the best Marvel comics for 3 years straight. Hats off. Ever since this series started, I loved it. 30 issue run! That's quite high for today's Marvel's standard.

This volume was so good. From issue 25 to issue 30, all was so good. I just wanted to have more, but alas. The story was superb. From the get-go, it was aiming to be great. The fight sequence were action packed. The storytelling was fluent. The twist at the end was something I didn't see coming.

Since it is comics, we all know it's not the end. But boy, this was a great way to conclude the run. Will be writing a full review of the run sooner or later.

The artwork is just magnificent. Every panel is eyepleasing. The colours are so vibrant. Perfectly matches the essence of the character.

Interesting how a run can end on a literal bang but still be a whimper compared to what's expected.

The last volume of this stellar MK run doesn't quite hit the same highs I've come to expect from this run by MacKay and co. With Cappuccino off art for the most part expect the first and last issues, at least with consistent coloring the visual language was kept.

The actual plot is fine, a scheme by some B/C listers to cause mass hysteria, but it lacks a big payoff. It never gets old watching Marc and his friends deal out brutal justice, it's just missing the panache I've come to expect. While Marc might be down for the count, the story is far from over.

Here's hoping Vengeance is coming for those who've wronged the midnight mission. The dangling Zodiac thread still has me tuned in. You don't take a psychos kill.

A genuinely tremendous finale to what has become my favourite Moon Knight run ever! The team of friends and family from Moon Knight Mackay has created/built upon. are so well realised that Marc saying goodbye to them felt genuinely quite painful, even tho I've already read his resurrection in Blood Hunt.

Tigra, Reece, Soldier, Hunters Moon and now 8 ball (how in the hell am I invested in the redemption arc of 8-ball?!) are all so great and it's the character interactions and relationships that really elevate this book for me.

That being said the action and the art has also been stellar throughout and I love all the D-list villains that get pulled out for Moon Knight runs, and the group in this book were no exception.

A fantastic end to a fantastic run and I can't wait to see what the Marc-less Midnight Mission looks like going forward!!!

Moon Knight Vol. 5 The Last Days of Moon Knight collects issues 25-30 of the Marvel Comics series written by Jed McKay with art by Partha Pratim, Alessandro Cappuccio, Alessandro Vito, and Federico Sabbatini.

Marc Spector’s mercenary past comes back to haunt him with a final confrontation with the Black Spectre and Zodiac, and this time Khonshu won’t be able to resurrect his disciple.

This was a good story, but I personally just couldn’t get invested. I struggled getting through the flash back to Marc’s mercenary days. This is a well written book overall, but I still prefer some other runs by Brian Michael Bendis, Warren Ellis, and Brian Wood and more.

30 glorious issues after MacKay's Moon Knight run started, we have reached the epic conclusion of maybe the best run for the character yet.

The art is so good, I lost count how many times I was in awe of another gorgeous splash of Moon Knight. The white suit looks fantastic, probably my favorite visual design for the character so far.

I'm eagerly looking forward to the collected issues of Vengeance of the Moon Knight. I'm sure the new stories will be great and I am happy MacKay's writing them as well.

The end of a fantastic run for the character. I gotta admit, the last few pages got me emotional. I would say this is the best Moon Knight run other than Jeff Lemire's. And let's be honest, it's very hard to top that one.

Once again the art work is stunning, as we've come to expect from this run. The writing is also quite strong, weaving an interesting backstory into the final conflict. This brings in major themes of guilt and redemption. Can't wait to see where the series goes next, though this does break my heart in a way.

Finished Mackay’s run on Moon Knight. Doesn’t hold a candle to Lemire’s masterpiece (nothing will) but this run is still great. It understands Moon Knight as a character, what makes him so special while adding new things to his character and his world. Just want I wanted. Get a bit to unfocus at times, by the end it all pays off. Glad Layla from the Moon Knight show appeared, that was neat despite not liking the show all that much. #25 was the best issue btw, the art was good throughout but 25 is where it really shine. Overall, not the best Moon Knight run but still worth reading.

We can all doubt is this is really the last days for Marc Spector.

But, if you put that aside this is a nice wrap up to a 30 issue run. McKay makes good use of the expanded cast, and I think this series has used its supporting characters the best since the days of Doug Moench.

For those who enjoy Batman stories, and know at least a little bit about Spector's past. I found this to be a better read than City of the Dead.

Jed MacKay's Moon Knight run ends with a bang as all Marc's chickens come home to roost, and they're bringing explosives with them. Everything has led to this; we get the prerequisite big reveals, a heroic ending for everyone involved, and a tease that this is definitely just the first step in a much bigger story that I can't wait to see unfold.

This entire run has been superb, and it doesn't miss a beat as it comes to a (temporary) close.
