A sweet, steamy, angsty and funny romance!

Sabrina lost all her trust in men in high school when she caught her best friend and her boyfriend together. Thankfully, Tyler Anderson, the schools tattooed bad boy hottie was there to help her home. It’s been 10 years since high school and she’s never forgotten him. When it comes time for her 10 year reunion, her amazing bestie Julie encourages her to go. She hasn’t been home in 10 years, but the hope of seeing Tyler is enough to get her to take that plunge.

Tyler just happens to be at the reunion. And he’s there for Sabrina. Sabrina and Tyler spend the night talking, getting to know each other again. It’s fast, but after spending a few days together, the both realize that they want to pursue something. Even if it is long distance. Neither one has ever felt this way about someone before…

 photo PromiseMe2jpg_zpsd590edfd.jpg

Everything was going great between them. It’s your typical sweet and sexy second chance romance. Until Tyler… Tyler… Tyler. I loved you. Tyler you hurt me. Tyler I hated you for a minute. I started to warm back up to you towards the end…. and the epilogue kind of sealed the deal for me. I love you again. But really, I had so many mixed feelings about this boy. He made an epic mistake. I loved that Sabrina didn’t straight away forgive and forget. She took her time and made sure she was making the best choice for her.

I read Barbie’s Playing It Safe last week, not realizing that the characters (Julia and Alex) were in this one. It was nice to get to see them both again. As much as I loved Tyler and Sabrina, they just didn’t compare to Julia and Alex for me. Those two are the best of the best. It was really great to see them in this book. Although towards the beginning of the story

Promise Me is a story I really enjoyed. This authors writing style is fantastic and fast paced. I love her characters and how she incorporates humor into her books. Just a word to the wise… this book does have some in it… But it wasn’t unforgivable for me x

***This review contains Spoilers***

So this book a bit of a let down... Well to be fair I was warned(Thank you Sara) but I guess its also the way you look at it...

Okay-
Basically the book starts off with a BANG where Sabrina goes to a party to surprise her boyfriend and guess what???!!

She sees him kissing and all over her BEST FRIEND

Distraught Sabrina is crying like mad as he was a first love who was a 'first' too and she's been dating him for 3 years!

Tyler the schools 'Bad boy' sees this and takes Sabrina away and at the same time he tells her she's beautiful and makes her Promise to end things the next day.

So she does and breaks off her friendship to her biach friend and few months later leaves home for college never to look back.

Fast forward 10years-
Yes you heard me...
10 YEARS

She hasn't been home at all because of what happened to her. She calls her family or they come see her.
In the meantime she lives in Italy for few years then moves back to Miami and has a great job and lives with her new Bff.

Until she gets an invitation to her 10year reunion..

Faced with finally seeing the people from her past she finally decided to confront her ex and her ex bff who marries her ex. No more running away.

Her Boss at her gallery Alex is sweet, kind and Gorgeous and is interested in her. But she only wants Tyler- the boy who she spoke to for 10mins 10years ago??

WTH???!!

Fast forward a bit...

She's going to go to the reunion because she wants to see Tyler. The boy who holds her heart even though she never had anything with him before?

Blah blah blah- the ex is sorry, he says he loves her still and made a mistake?
Say what???! His been married to her ex friend and has 2 kids!!!!!

Her friend tells her she's a bitch and hates her... Ok insecure bitch, whatever!

Then there's Tyler...

They finally 'hook up' and are in love or whatever in a blink of an eye.
It appears that 10min conversation had a lifelong effect on Tyler like Sabrina.

All good things come to an end- Sabrina goes home with the promise to make their relationship work.
She tells Alex the freaken hottie she's in love with someone else and nothing can happen.

After a few weeks of phone calls and texts Tyler hears that Sabrina hooked up with her boss and gets drunk and Screws one of his staff.

Deal breaker!!!!!!!!

Sabrina finds out and is shattered and he begs her to forgive him

SOO... He cheats knowing how she HATES cheating and his even begging?

Really really cheesy story and totally unrealistic for me... It's him. If you had told me it was him and I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I would have called you a liar. Somewhere in the back of my mind, where I can barely process what is going on around me, I tell myself that I shouldn't be here watching this. I should walk away, or better yet, run as fast as I can, to nowhere in particular. But I don't. I stand there frozen in the shadows watching him through the window. Him. He's my first love and my life...

High school senior Sabrina Chandler sneaks out of her house where she was confined by punishment to go to a party and be with her boyfriend, Chris. When she arrives at the party she gets an emotional punch to the gut as she watches Chris betray her right before her eyes. On that night everything changes. On that night she finds a savior in the last person she would expect to be her rescuer. Tyler Anderson, the guy every girl wants; the very well known tatted up bad boy in the small town of Skippack, Pennsylvania.

‘Yes, he was that gorgeous. The quintessential, tall, dark and handsome type who would probably break your heart in a million pieces while making sure you had the time of your life in the process. He was also my savior that horrible night years ago. He helped me when I needed it most and for that I'm forever grateful.’

Tyler gives Sabrina advice that night. And she follows it to the T.

The Invitation
Fast forward ten years later. Sabrina now resides in Miami, Florida. She is living with her best friend Juila whom she met and roomed with in college. Sabrina has received an invite to her 10 year high school reunion but she refuses to go. It takes a whole lot of coaxing from Julia; whose main argument focused on the fact that she will get to see Tyler again before she finally agrees to go.

 photo fdeecce6-f17b-4ede-b3ae-ce45267b07f2_zps3b80b5ca.jpg

Once back in Skippack Sabrina must face her past. Chris.

‘I stare at him for a second because honestly, I'm so over him and his apology that is ten years too late that I want to make sure I get the next thing I say completely right so he can just leave.’

Everything comes to a head when Chris confronts Sabrina which in turn leads to his wife confronting Sabrina taking the drama to an ALL TIME HIGH.
Honestly all the bullsh*t with her ex is worth it once she gets to the reunion and sees him. Tyler Anderson. Sexier than ever and looking right at her.

"Don't be nervous." He pauses then adds, "I won't bite, I promise."

Sabrina goes back to Tyler’s hotel room so they can…talk. Tyler makes it clear that he wants Sabrina and that he is in it for the long haul. He is very up front about why he held himself back from pursuing her in high school after that night. He then makes it very clear that he wants Sabrina and that he is in it for the long haul.

The next day Sabrina goes to her parents home where she is staying to pack a bag so that she can prolong her time with Tyler. She drives to his home in Philadelphia, where he owns and runs his own restaurant. Sparks fly as the two connect getting to know each other on a very personal, very sexy, instinctive level. *wiggles eyebrows*

 photo tumblr_menh7hwTvS1qdz3mzo1_500_zps67e5755a.gif

A long distance relationship is not ideal but they make it work. And then a few days before Tyler’s first visit to Miami he f*cks up. BIG TIME.

How does a girl recover from heartache a second time around? Ice cream, a good luck blanket and a best friend with your best interest at heart. That's how.

My thoughts
Barbie did a good job in her debut novel she brought the steam, the laughs, the romance, the drama and the heartache. She also has a little bit of a love triangle going but really once Tyler is on the scene he eradicates any other male suitors. This book is a solid 3.5 for me I enjoyed her writing and more importantly I enjoyed her characters. I am very interested to know if Julia will be getting her own book possibly with Alex??? *fingers crossed* Julia’s character really stuck out to me and I think at times she overshadowed the heroine Sabrina. Were as Sabrina is laid back, Julia is more in your face and I very much liked that about her.
I look forward to future books from this author!

WARNING: This book contains cheating if you do not like that in your reads this may not be for you.

My Ratings

Nice, quiet day in the office so was able to squeeze another book in. Liked this one. A good bit into it I was thinking "c’mon he is just too good to be true!"… and then Wham, Bam, Thank-you Mam, something happened ….. Story sort of took off from there with a bit more drama, which it needed and it finished up nicely with a good old HEA.

OK, this next one is maybe not the best pic for the review, but if you have read it you will "get it"

"Can he be any more perfect? There has to be something wrong with him or a secret life he hasn’t shared with me yet."

Well, you got your answer to that one about half way in, didn’t you Sabrina?

"There are only two people in my life who have ever seen the real me. One of them died when I was six years old, the other one is standing right in front of me."

VAN "The Man" Morrison - Into the Mystic

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when that fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don't have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
Then magnificently we will float into the mystic
And when that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don't have to fear it
I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will float into the mystic
Come on girl...

And this is her brainchild a few years down the road…. (Well, in my lil' old imagination anyway)

It started with a promise to the hottest guy in her senior class the night she finds her best friend and boyfriend together.

Ten years later Sabrina can’t get that tattooed bad boy out of her thoughts and things always seem to come back to him and that night.

”Go to bed, Sabrina,” he says to me, “promise me, that tomorrow you’ll dump his sorry ass, cut that bitch out of your life, and try to hold on as best you can until you’re out of this shit hole town in a couple of months.”

Sabrina Chandler lives in Miami with her FANTASTIC best friend Julia. Julia has to be one of the greatest bffs written.

”Who am I?” She shouts, “I’m your worst fucking nightmare! I’m the best friend who’s going to tell you ‘baby’ to never talk to you again.” ~ Julia

Sabrina works in the art field and tries to put all who reside in Skippack, PA out of her mind until the day an invitation to her ten year reunion shows up.

”I don’t know how to tell her that I’m putting all my hopes in a basket with a big bow on it called “Tyler”.

Julia talks Sabrina into going to her reunion for two reasons 1-closure with Chris and Lisa and 2-Tyler maybe there. Meanwhile, at work her sexy boss decides this is the time to put the moves on her.

Things ignite from the moment Sabrina arrives home between Chris, Lisa and herself. These scenes were like crack I couldn’t get enough they were so exciting… DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA!

Sabrina makes her entrance at her reunion and WOW this scene was not to be skipped. Drinks fly, chemistry ignites and someone may or may not have been looking for her with the same hopes as she has.

”Sabrina, the things I’ve said to you, I’ve never said to anyone else. The way I feel when I’m around you, I’ve never felt anything like it before. I want to be a part of you…your life, because everything…every little piece of me was always meant to be yours.”

Our main character and her love interest struggle with attempting a long distance relationship as well as deciding whether to move forward from a huge mistake.

”I, Sabrina Chandler, the same girl who gave her heart away ten years ago to a dream, has to decide if the reality is worth the heartache and forgive him.”

Barbie Bohrman did one hell of a job with her debut novel it was well paced, funny, sexy sexy, relatable and well written.

On a side note, I know there are a few Goodread readers who aren’t fans of cheating so here is your disclaimer…there is cheating. Other than that go forth and enjoy!

I found Promise Me after a friend told me it was the first book to Playing it Safe, I actually read them out of order - they are spinoffs not a series, so it's okay. I only bring this up to explain how much I loved Playing it Safe, and couldn’t wait to read this one. I started out really liking it and felt like it would be a sugary sweet story. However, something occurred that I cannot seem to forgive or forget.

Sabrina and Tyler went to high school together, and by together I mean they attended the same high school. They never really talked until the night Tyler comforted Sabrina after she found her long time boyfriend was cheating on her with her best friend. After that night both went their separate ways, not speaking again until their ten year reunion.

Sabrina hasn’t stayed in contact with anyone from school and now lives in Miami with her best friend Julia. Sabrina doesn’t want to go to the reunion and confront her past, but decides to attend in hopes of seeing Tyler again.

Tyler is a man-whore and has never been in a relationship. However, he has thought about Julia throughout the years and decides to attend the reunion with the hopes of seeing her.

After meeting up again, having a hot sex filled weekend, they decide to give their relationship a try.

I like this concept and I was still on board, then we factor in the long distance and I was even more interested - I was in a long distance relationship for a while with my husband so I always like to see couples overcome the challenges.

Things really fell apart for me at this point and I can’t say why without completely spoiling the book. I am including a spoiler, read at your own risk.

There is some insta-love and that was annoying, because I kept thinking you haven’t seen each other in ten years and it isn’t like you were close in high school. However, I am sucker for a love story, so I moved on. I think this book could have been a 4 star read without the big incident. A lot of people will love this book, it just wasn’t for me. ”Promise me that tomorrow you’ll dump his sorry ass, cut that bitch out of your life, and try to hold on as best you can until you’re out of this shit hole town in a couple of months.”

Yes, Tyler! I promise! Anything for you!

The book starts out with high school senior Sabrina catching her boyfriend of three years making out with her best friend. Before she can flee the scene, town bad boy and all around hottie Tyler gives her the sage advice from above and makes sure she gets home safely. Luckily Sabrina follows Tyler’s advice and a few months later, starts a new life for herself. Fast forward ten years and its high school reunion time! Does she go and confront the two people who did her wrong? Does she go and try to find out what might’ve been with Tyler? Sabrina’s bff Julia, one of my favorite characters EVER, thinks she should confront her past and move on.

”Listen, it really sucks to have a guy cheat on you, trust me, I know, we’ve all been there. It’s like some messed up rite of passage into the Ya-Ya Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I get it. He’s a piece of shit and deserves to have his dick shrivel up and fall off. But, there’s a whole other level of bottom feeders, and that’s where your girl Lisa is for what she did to you. There’s definitely a special place in hell for chicks like her.”

Well said, girlfriend! Julia is quite possibly the coolest best friend ever written along with being a truly awesome friend to Sabrina.

”Look at yourself for crying out loud, with those curves, that hair, and your green eyes. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, your mom must’ve fucked a gypsy to get you.”

She finally talks Sabrina into going so she doesn’t have to wonder about Tyler and his extreme hotness the rest of her life. And if she gets to say a few choice things to her ex- boyfriend and best friend, well that’s an added bonus! I loved the drama of the reunion and the confrontations galore! Who hasn’t wanted to give someone who’s done them wrong a verbal beat down? Then there’s Tyler. Hot piece of man candy Tyler.

yes, he was that gorgeous. The quintessential tall, dark and handsome type who would probably break your heart in a million pieces while making sure you had the time of your life in the process.

It seems Tyler’s always wondered “what if?” about Sabrina and the two decide, after a weekend of lovin’, to give a long distance relationship a go.

I really enjoyed this book! The writing was entertaining and fun and I was surprised to find out this is a debut novel. This could’ve easily been a 5 star for me if it weren’t for the last 30% of the book. Tyler resorts to some extremely douche-like behavior and it seemed completely out of character, almost like drama for the sake of making the story angsty. I don’t mind that when it seems like something the character would actually do given their personality but that wasn’t the case here. The way Sabrina handled the situation seemed completely realistic, though I’m not sure if I would’ve made the same choice in the end.

I had a fabulous time reading this and I’d like to make a personal plea to the author—PLEASE GIVE JULIA HER OWN BOOK!

**********Major spoiler alert***********Pls. read at your own risk.

Basically the whole premise of the book was BETRAYAL. The female main character, Sabrina, was cheated on by her best friend and her boyfriend in high school. There was this bad boy, Tyler, who saved her from further humiliation and took her back home that unfortunate night. He told her that the affair between her bff and bf had been going on for months! Yeah, I know! When I read the synopsis, I was so gung ho and I couldn't wait to start the book. It's a revenge book and it sure looked sweet. Cool!!!

Anywhoo, she left town to go to college far, far away, and got a job ...10 years had passed and she was invited to her class reunion. Oooh goody! This is the part where sweet revenge was going to kick in. She was going to see Tyler and fall madly in love. But before I get ahead of myself, there was also another character introduced and it was Sabrina's boss...Alex and he is a hot, rich, good looking boss that hankered after her for weeks. This is the part where my head shaking and my wtf started. She didn't want Alex because she was still besotted with Tyler from 10 years ago. I know! WTF, Right? Are you for realz? So, to make the story short, Sabrina and Tyler got hot and bothered through the weekend and so forth.

Wait for it...wait...this is the main kicker...Tyler cheated on Sabrina one night because a girl who has been trying to f*%k him tells him Sabrina is dating another guy. So, he got sloppy drunk and ooops got his d*ck into bed with the slut. WHAT?! At this point, my head was spinning. Rage was boiling over and I almost (ALMOST) threw my Kindle across the room.

Like I said before, the main premise of the story was her trust issue because she was BETRAYED by the people that supposedly cared for her. Tyler was supposed to be the hero of the story and he cheated on her. The dumb ass (Tyler) just went by the slut's story who wanted to jump his ass. Why didn’t he just ask Sabrina? Why cheat on her? He was there, for Chris sake’s when she was cheated on the first time!!! I understand you have to add angst and twist to a story but this was insane. It's another form of betrayal and it came from the main hero. I can't even say, poor Sabrina because she forgave him so easily and moved back to Philadelphia. Here’s another kicker, who do you think gave a glowing recommendation for her to get this job in Philly? ALEX!!! I know! The hot, good looking boss and he was even LOCAL.

Clearly, I didn’t enjoy the book...major freaking *eye roll.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

4 solid stars!

I totally cheated. I was reading another book when I got bored and started trolling the forum threads over at Amazon and found this as a rec. I started reading it without any high expectations and by golly, it was better than I actually expected. This book totally cured me of my book slump.

Now, there's nothing revolutionary in the story line but I didn't mind because I found the characters to be really likable. I especially love Julie, "the best friend" who was an awesome ally, confidant for the main character Sabrina. I loved their banter. Plus, it doesn't hurt that there are two man candies, Tyler and Alex, in this book, so I didn't mind that either.

The plot is sort of predictable but still it is well done. I should probably warn you that there is in this book. If you can't tolerate these types of books, it's better to stay away. I really enjoyed it.

It just proves that sometimes, you really don't need some deep, complicated, thought-provoking literary masterpiece to get one out of a book slump. A very simple book with enjoyable characters can do the trick!

Hurray!

I’m not going to rate this because I skimmed most of the first 60% (I was only interested in the betrayal) but from what I did read the H Tyler was pretty swoony (in a NA sort of way) before he screwed up.

In a nutshell, Sabrina walked in on her HS BF about to get it on with her BFF and was heartbroken. Tyler stepped in to save the day (and her dignity), and the two had a magical connection. Sabrina took off after graduation but kept that Tyler furnace burning for the next 10 years. For his part, Tyler has also been hung up on Sabrina over the years. (I skimmed buckets and can’t confirm the separation except that I know Tyler was with others)

With her new/better BFF’s urging, Sabrina decides to return home for her school reunion to see if Tyler shows up. Little does she know he is also planning to attend in hopes she comes. They reconnect, sparks fly, and mild drama ensues from an ex-Fbuddy Ava. But these two are soulmates and committed to making their long-distance romance work.

The Betrayal-

Right?? YUM. Unfortunately, those good vibes don’t last because instead of pulling up their sleeves and crawling through the trenches to forgiveness… Sabrina ignores him while trapping us in her mind in a mind-numbing loop of her feeling sorry for herself. Over and over and over and over… I love him—I can’t live without him, but I can’t trust him... I want him—I want him, but I can’t trust him. What should I do? What can I do?

It was so boring and such a waste because Tyler was dying inside and just waiting to crawl over broken glass all the way to wherever the hell she was, but SHE”S NOT TALKING TO HIM. So much missed grovel!!

So, after chapters and chapters and chapters of that she finally works it out… in her head of course and makes the choice to go after him. PFFT.

Bottom Line- The betrayal was alright, but the aftermath was dreadful. This had the potential for epic grovel, but the author chose to have Sabrina annoy us rather than Tyler work for it. It also felt fabricated because outside of that one chapter, Tyler was 1000% into making it work, so it didn’t make sense and felt manipulated. The epilogue was equally disappointing because after the rushed reconnection… we FINALLY get his POV and it’s of him watching her sleep… a few days or weeks later. Sigh. You can read it with KU, and it comes with the audiobook, but the narration isn’t the best.

5 "High School Reunion and Second Chance" Stars!

This is my second book by Barbie Bohrman and I think it's safe to say that she's fast becoming one of my top fave authors.

Full review to come as soon as I get my thoughts together....

Loved Tyler. The long lost bad boy who came to Sabrina's rescue on the worst night of her life.

Loved Sabrina. A true romantic who runs away from relationships and finally decides to risk it all.

Loved Sabrina's mum. Best verbal-bitch-slap scene ever!

And most of all... I loved Julia!!
"I swear I will get on a plane so fast and personally plant my foot so far up your ass that you’ll taste leather in your fucking throat for a week.”
.... Can't wait to start her book next!

There are some elements/themes that might not appeal to everyone, the story does include some cheating, which might put some readers off entirely, but if you like second chance at love stories, if you like mysterious men with tattoos who come to your rescue, and you want a totally charming tale of true love, you should definitely give this one a go.

What a beautiful and heart-wrenching story!

After catching her boyfriend and her supposed "best friend" in a compromising position, Sabrina finds unexpected strength in the town bad-boy, Tyler. Over the next 10 years, she doesn't return to her childhood town, not wanting to relive the betrayal that has cast a shadow over all her future relationships. Trust is something that she no longer has in romantic relationships.

When she once again sees Tyler at her 10 year class reunion, she is once again drawn to the mysterious boy from her past. Soon, the two slip into a whirlwind romance. Their love for the other seems all-consuming, and then the other shoe drops.

What an emotional ride! This story ran the full gamut of emotions. I felt elation, devastation, betrayal, crushing sadness, anger and regret. My heart went out to Sabrina. Yet, I couldn't give up on Tyler either.

This book was fantastic! I listened to much of it on my Audible app in the car and the narration was fabulous.

Well, well. There’s a new author in town, and her name is Barbie Bohrman. Remember that because I do believe you’re going to be hearing it, like, a lot over the coming years. Or, you should…at least in my opinion. This author’s debut, Promise Me, had just about everything a reader could possibly want or desire, and it delivered in an almost deceptively quiet, mature, understated manner, with the ease and ability of true talent. I’m a fan, Barbie Bohrman. I am most definitely a fan!

One thing I feel like I need to point out at the beginning, there are some who are labeling and shelving this as New Adult. In my opinion, it’s not. Once someone is twenty-five or older, settled into his or her career, and has been living an independent life for a number of years, there’s no longer any ‘new’ about the adult. At that point, it’s simply adult. And there’s not a single thing wrong or uninteresting about that. Much as I love New Adult, there is life, love and drama past the age of twenty-four. Promise Me is a wonderful Adult Contemporary Romance. I want everyone to be aware of that and to embrace it as such.

Also, I know there are some who are extremely uncomfortable and unhappy reading a story which includes cheating. So, I honestly believe I have to make the point that there IS cheating in Promise Me. If that is an absolute no-go for you, then please don’t read. It isn’t fair to you, as a reader, and it isn’t fair to the author. However, if I haven’t scared you off by this point, then please also hear me when I say that, personally, I’m a reader who has one of two reactions to cheating in a story. I will either loathe it with every fiber of my being, and it will stop me cold from reading the remainder of the book. Or, I can eventually get past it and continue. For me, it depends entirely on how the subject is handled and written by the author. I realize it’s very subjective, as reading in general is, but I do feel Barbie Bohrman did an exceptional job dealing with this terribly difficult topic. It was honest, emotional and not glossed over. In my opinion, it does not ruin the appeal of the book AT ALL.

There was so much genuine depth of emotion in this story, and I love, love, love that!! Promise Me had love, lust, joy, elation, humor, friendship, sadness, desperation, frustration, anger, guilt, betrayal, redemption, forgiveness. But, none of it was overdone. As I said, it was genuine. It was organic. It was honest and real. Sometimes, the word ‘real’ scares people off, and I don’t want to do that. For all of the reality, this is still, first and foremost, a story that entertains. It is possible to have both!!

Sabrina and Tyler had a tangible connection and attraction to one another, even after ten years. I absolutely loved them together, and I never questioned if it should last, if they should have a happily-ever-after, despite everything that occurs.

“Sabrina, the things I’ve said to you, I’ve never said to anyone else. The way I feel when I’m around you, I’ve never felt anything like it before. I want to be a part of you…your life, because everything…every little piece of me was always meant to be yours.”

These two were fascinating, fully fleshed-out characters each in their own right. I so enjoyed watching them reconnect, feeling the strength of a bond that never actually broke. They were tested as a couple, and they came out stronger and better. I believed that. I could feel it!

I do have to admit, Sabrina’s best friend, Julia, was one of the highlights of Promise Me! I actually found myself jealous of Sabrina for having such an amazing, loving, giving, nurturing, loyal, hilarious best friend!! It’s a little bit sad that, on several occasions, I thought, “Friends that incredible do NOT exist.” Well, in my personal experience, they don’t. But, I cherished the opportunity to live through Sabrina and, for a short time anyway, have a best friend like Julia. I was over the moon to find out that her story is up next! I cannot wait!! Crossing my fingers that I (hopefully) know who shell be paired with!

Overall, I have to recommend this story and this author. I was, and am, so impressed. There is just something about this author’s ‘voice’ that I can’t quite put my finger on, but whatever it is, it had me reading until the wee hours of the morning because I couldn’t put this book down. I found it thoroughly engaging, and I am SO looking forward to more from Barbie Bohrman!!

4.5 Stars

4.5 FANTASTIC STARS

I loved Promise Me by Barbie Bohrman. It was fun, sweet, sexy, a little heartbreaking but also refreshing. It’s a second chance love story that brought me some major tummy flutters. I think there might be a new book boyfriend for me in this book. Tyler was OH MY, hot and swoony. He has a touch of alpha and a sprinkle of delicious bad boy in him that definitely brought some sexy moments. He’s really what made this story fantastic for me. Barbie’s writing is really good. Almost immediately her prologue grips you and breaks your heart. But while it’s breaking your heart, it’s also opening your eyes to this sexy, sweet bad boy that saves the day. She has such a good way at describing things and making you feel every emotion that’s going on. It was addicting and I could not read this book fast enough. I have to say for a debut novel I was blown away by her writing, character development and the way her plot moved forward. I can’t wait to read more from her in the future.

After catching her best friend and the love of her life (or so she thought) in a BAD position Sabrina is heartbroken. Tyler the ultimate high school bad boy swooped in that awful night and made Sabrina make a promise. A promise that has always stuck with her.

Ten years later she’s living in Miami, working as a Gallery assistant and is hopelessly single. She can’t seem to hold a steady relationship because of the trust issues she has from her high school days. In the last ten years she can’t get Tyler out of her mind. He’s always there and is this fantasy that she can’t get past. When an invitation to her 10 year high school reunion arrives Sabrina has to figure out if she wants to go home to the place she’s been steadily avoiding for the past 10 yrs and confront her sack of crap ex, her sluttly ex best friend and most importantly see if Tylers there and what happened to him. Sabrina still carries a crush for the boy that saved her on one of the worst night’s of her life. After lots of thinking and a lot of convincing by her best friend Julia (who might I add is freaking awesome), Sabrina decides that going home and seeing if maybe Tylers there is something she just can’t pass up.

When Sabrina gets home she has to confront her past, She has to put all of that stuff behind her and learn to let go and forgive. It’s hard and messy but she does it with a whole lot of fun and heartbreak along the way. Does Tyler show up? Do they get their second chance at love? Is Tyler really the man she had dreamed up in her fantasies? Or just a figment of her imagination? Sabrina finds out pretty quickly and a sweet love stories is written that I fell in love with.

Overall I have to say that I just love a second chance love story and this one is NOT perfect. Tyler swoops in and you really do fall head over heels in love with him but he’s a human being that makes mistakes along the way and those mistakes weren't little. They cause some damage and heart break. This stories itself is very realistic and I think that Tyler was sexy, sweet and totally lovable. He gave me those illusive book tingles.

Sabrina is a strong girl. She’s definitely not someone that you can trample over. She’s an achiever and works hard. Her Bff Julia is HILARIOUS and the two of them together are AMAZING. They have that friendship that leaves you smiling.

This really was a great debut by a new fabulous new author. I would HIGHLY recommend this book and can’t wait to see what else this author has for us. Definitely a MUST> read. My rating is 4.5 Fabulous stars.

Sorry, just no. The author said this is a story about forgiveness and about the heroine growing. What about the hero growing? After ten years he is still an impulsive asshole! Why should the heroine forgive him? After actually witnessing first hand the heroine’s ex high school sweetheart and best friend cheating on her, and witnessing her devastation, to then go and cheat on her 10 years later is unforgivable! He is scum. Also the best friend being like it takes guts fly across the country to fight for you, as if that’s enough, was a joke. Like the heroine said he already had the ticket booked. He was no hero and I still think he could cheat in the future. Atrocious book, that says no matter how many times people fuck you over, you must be able to forgive! Please!
This excerpt from the book should tell you everything yoylu need to know about this loser:

“Ava said…,” he trails off because just the sound of her name from his lips makes my stomach lurch in response and I cut him off. “I don’t care what she told you, Tyler! If you have a problem with something that concerns me, about us, then you man up and ask me about it.” “Did you or did you not go on a date with him since you’ve been back home?” “No, I didn’t! Didn’t you hear a single word I’ve just said to you? Do you honestly not believe me right now? Because that would be perfect, considering what you said to me last night.” “I was drunk, I didn’t mean it.” “Is that supposed to make me feel better?” “I told you when you were here… I warned you that I’m not use to this shit. I fuck up, that’s what I always do.” “So you get to go ‘slumming’ then you apologize and blame it on being drunk? I’m supposed to just accept your apology and forget about all of this because you love me so much, is that right, Tyler? Did I leave anything out?” “Cut the sarcastic bullshit, Sabrina,” he says in a huff. “Look, I never said that I was perfect. I told you from day one that I was a selfish bastard.” “Are you fucking kidding me? Are you really going to sit there and tell me that because you’re not use to this, that I should have known better? That I should have seen this coming?” I don’t know how I manage to stave off the sobbing; perhaps the rage I’m feeling is that strong. Whatever it is, I’m done. I’m so done with this conversation that the silence doesn’t even register until he says my name. “Are you still there?” he asks. “What do you want from me, Tyler?” “You.” “Please… just leave me alone,” I say expelling what little energy I have left. He sighs and I can picture him on the other line running his hands through his hair in frustration. “I can’t do that, baby. If you won’t let me explain, then at least let me say one thing.” I don’t say yes or no. All my words have been used up. I’ve reached my quota for the day and he notices since I don’t hang up. Instead, I stay on the line and listen in morbid curiosity to what he has to say. “I’m not giving up, Sabrina. If it takes every day for the rest of my fucking life, I’m going to fix this.” “Did you fuck her?” He stays quiet for too long then exhales loudly before answering. “Yes.”

Anyone blaming the FMC, or saying she should forgive him needs their head testing. What is it with female authors hating their FMC and being doormats? Also her friend and mother are fucking losers.

"You love me? You know what, don't even answer that. You don't know what the hell love is, Tyler. If you did, you wouldn't have done what you are claiming to be so sorry for. It wouldn't even have been a fleeting thought. If you did actually love me, you would know how much this would kill me. You would know that I would never forgive you. So please don't say that you love me, because it's obvious you don't have a clear grasp of what that word means."

"Did you fuck her?"
He stays quiet for too long then exhales loudly before answering me. "Yes."

MC Sabrina doesn't want to let the events of one eventful and awful night from ten years ago control her emotions and her choices, but it's kinda hard to forget a betrayal like that, or the potential but never fulfilled promise that went along with it. She's moved as far away as she can, physically and emotionally, but there's still a tug that pulls her back. So when she receives an invitation to her ten year high school reunion, she decides to go back and deal. Whoo boy, does that spark a series of emotional events that bring Sabrina, along with some powerful positive and painful emotions, back to life! But old habits, old feelings, old emotions aren't always easily overcome. Does she have the courage and the heart to make it happen?

This is such a sweet read, from the gripping prologue to the satisfying resolution, that you just don't want to pass it up! Author Barbie knows her way around the landscape of the heart, and you can trust her to take you on a sweet and soulful guided tour, one that will involve some tears, some laughter, and a real feeling MC that will have you feeling and rooting for her all the way. Shout out to awesome BFF Julia, too! Everyone deserves a friend like this, but Sabrina is lucky enough to actually have one!

Just a great romance read, I promise you'll love this one, I sure did!

4.5 stars!

Often with debut novels by new authors, I'm left with a feeling of wanting just a little more. ( Don't judge me. This is my review and I'm being honest.
First, the plot. We are introduced to Sabrina briefly as a high-school senior when she experiences a heartbreak of epic proportions. Yes, I said epic! Who doesn't remember their first love AND their first heartbreak TO THIS DAY? I know I do. His name was....well, nevermind. Back to Sabrina. The story then brings us to Sabrina's life ten years later. We see how the betrayal, heartbreak and the memory of "the boy who was standing in the shadows" that night ten years ago have never fully left her mind or her heart.

The supporting characters were all relevant. I didn't feel as if there was anyone in this story who didn't belong and or have something to offer. The dynamic between Sabrina and her best friend, Julia, had me cracking up. Alex...who wouldn't love to have a boss like Alex? Tyler, the tattooed bad boy from Sabrina's memory.

Promise Me has all the ingredients for a great read: humor (check), romance (check), drama (check), and angst ( "I'm talking Brenda/Dylan/Kelly kind of angst. ") The best part is that the ingredients were perfectly measured and added at just the right times. I laughed - a lot. I mean, seriously....

"I shake my head and smirk, accepting my fate that I've officially lost my mind, realizing I'm sitting in an empty parking lot comparing my life to that of Brenda Walsh." Who didn't love Beverly Hills 90210???

I shed a few tears. I wanted to hurt someone (or c p someone, to be more exact.) My heart rate accelerated in both the good and bad kind of ways.

I can't even talk about the Gone With the Wind references. Ok, so, yes I can. Scarlett, God Bless her dramatic little Southern heart. "" Tomorrow is another day. "" "You're goddamn right it is, Scarlett." I may have loved the GWTW references a tad too much.

I have a ridiculous amount of highlights that I want to share with you, but I won't. You need to read this for yourself. I promise you won't regret it. Now, I need you to do something for me. I need for you to.........wait for it.......

Well, this book was an epic fail for me...and the cheating wasn’t the issue for me. I’d have to care about the characters for that to happen. This story had a chick-lit vibe (which I don’t like). Plus, the hero felt like a secondary character as other characters took up more page time than him. There was groveling and a HEA.

Was I supposed to like anyone in this book?

I'm trying to properly put my feelings into words, but I keep getting angry.

So I started reading this last year because I was going to a book festival. I stopped for some reason and realized yesterday I never finished it. So I finished it.

description

Promise Me starts off with the typical girl gets cheated on by her boyfriend and best friend (did everyone have an awful best friend in high school? My bff from high school is still one of my besties now. Never understand this trope). The town's bad boy sees her during this awful time and despite his reputation, proves to be absolutely swoon worthy. He's basically Ryan Gosling at this point. She takes this with her, remembers him fondly, and spends ten years obsessing over him.

Like a crazy person.

Don't get me wrong, I had crushes in high school. But it's been ten years for me, too, and I have hardly given them much thought over the years. It's called growing up. Obsessing over the glory days is sad and doesn't fit someone who is supposedly so successful.

That's right, Sabrina is now successful in Miami, living like Friends with her best friend Julia. Working towards being a Head Art Curator, she's happy with her life. Then the dreaded ten year reunion invitation shows up. Should she go? Will Tyler be there? What if her ex Chris is there?

"'STOP THINKING ABOUT IT! JUST GO!'"

Well, with those words of wisdom, Julia, who can say no?! And yes, they were written in all caps in the book.

So she decides to go, mostly with the hopes of seeing Tyler again. In her best LBD, she sets off to deal with her ex-boyfriend, ex-best friend, and the man that stole her heart with all his rebel ways. Well, what do we figure out at the reunion?

Chris and Lisa got married, though she's insecure and he claims to still miss Sabrina. Tyler was never really that bad, and is all good now. And that Sabrina is living out a bad version of Romy and Michele.

description

Actually, if her character said that, I might have some respect for her. Mostly she said how Lisa was mean and she wanted to bone Tyler.

As you can probably guess, Tyler and her hit it off and start a very dysfunctional, long distance relationship.

So here is the thing: I had no respect for any of the characters in this book. It wasn't enjoyable because of this. Sabrina let everyone walk all over her - Lisa, her mom, Tyler, her best friend, her boss, etc. Grow a backbone, sweetheart. Her inner thoughts revealed how she would be upset when her mom would bring up Lisa or how she was insecure about Tyler, but she never voiced any of these issues. She was annoying as hell.

Lisa and Julia were both so over the top that they clearly were pure fiction. Sometimes you can tell when an author draws from real life people, but these were cliched friends taken from Mean Girls.

And Tyler...

Please tell me how anyone can like him after . Yeah, real lovable guy.

description

Aside from the plot, the writing was generic. Not filled with spelling and grammar mistakes, but you can tell it's self-published. All the OH MY GOD ALL CAPS kind of gave it away.

AMAZING DEBUT NOVEL!

I was fortunate to read an ARC of Promise Me, the debut novel by Barbie Bohrman. I absolutely loved it! It has all of the workings a new adult romance should; anticipation, humor, attitude, drama and sex.

Sabrina is a fabulous protagonist, she has worked extremely hard to create a life for herself after high school, but is still trapped thinking about the boy she made a promise to 10 years ago. Her best friend and roommate, Julia, is hilarious. She is snarky and witty and everything you would want in a bestie. She pushes Sabrina in just the right ways to help her discover who she is and what she wants.

As for the fellas in this book? They do not disappoint. Tyler is a hot, mysterious, tattooed bad-boy that will win you over easily. He rivals all of the book boy friends out there. Move over Travis, Kellan and Christian, there is a new hottie in town..... Oh, sorry, where was I?

I fell in love with the characters right away and became emotionally invested in the story. It was extremely hard to put this one down. It flows well and just gets better as the book progresses. Barbie has done a fantastic job on her first book. I love it and I know most everyone else will too.

Go on, what are you waiting for? READ IT!

I absolutely LOVE Barbie Bohrman’s debut novel, “Promise Me.” The author delivers an engaging and well-executed story that will bring about various emotions in you as you follow the captivating story of true love of Tyler and Sabrina from when they first met to when they meet up again ten years later. The author does a brilliant job making the story and the characters feel as realistic as possible. She includes insightful and multifaceted characters that you’ll fall in love with be it the protagonists, or the two supporting characters, Alex and Julia. Julia is the definition of a true best friend. She’s supportive and comforting of her relationship with Sabrina; while witty and entertaining leaving the reader wishing for just such a friend. And Alex – Wow! What a nice surprise. I found him to be classy, almost mesmerizing. The author strays from the mainstream of the always jealous, demanding and overbearing boss fighting his rival (the hero) for the heroine’s affections. Trust me when I say you’ll fall in love with Alex like I did and hope that he too will find true love. This is a definite must-read as “Promise Me” is a first-rate novel worthy of reading. I look forward to more exciting works by this new author.

Debut novel by Barbie Bohrman

*This ARC was given to me for an honest review*

Promise Me starts off when Sabrina is a senior in high school. She sneaks out of her house to go to a party so that she could be with her boyfriend Chris. When she arrives at the party she is met with heartache and the ultimate betrayal. The kind of heartache and betrayal that haunts her for years. That night the sexiest bad boy in town and school, Tyler Anderson, helps her get home and makes her promise him that she will forget about the people who caused her pain until she leaves the shit hole town that they live in.

***Fast forward 10 years***

Sabrina works at an art gallery as a Gallery Assistant and lives in Miami with her best friend Julia. She recieves an invitation to her 10 year high school reunion.

The gradutaing class of 2001 invites you to
our 10 year class reunion!
June 25th, 2011, Skippack Golf Club,
Five-thirty for cocktails,
Followed by dinner and dancing at six0thirty.

Her bestie Julia (I just love her!!) convinces Sabrina to go so that she can finally confront those who hurt her so that she can move on from her past and to hopefully meet with Tyler again. She doesn't think that it's something that he would show up too but still hopes that he does.

Before Sabrina leaves for her reunion, her boss Alex let's her know that he is interested in her in more than just an employee. She finds him attractive but she doesn't want to mix business with pleasure and plus there is Tyler. She also recieves a voicemail from one of the people who betrayed her.

WHORE!!!! <<<< That's me shouting at the WHOREbag!

She finally arrives at her home town and drama starts on her first night there. First by bumping into Lauren (the town gossip) and her ex-douchebag boyfriend Chris.

Things get very interesting from then on. What happens at the reunion? I'm not saying but I will say this...Sabrina fucking ROCKS!! Not only what she says to certain individuals but also what she wears to the reunion.

Does Tyler show up to the reunion? Oh again i'm not saying. Maybe. Maybe not. *shrugs shoulders*

When Sabrina and Tyler finally do meet up (not saying when that happens) you feel the connection between them immediately. Your heart starts to race a little from excitement, joy and happiness. You cheer them on as they get to know one another and pant and sigh during the sexy times.

Then...THEN...your heart will race because of heartache. You feel Sabrina's pain like it's your own (you even feel the heartache from when she was in high school-b/c we all have experienced and remember that first love & heartbreak).

Julia...she is a fucking kickass bestie. You don't ever and I mean never ever in your life do you want to cross her or a loved one. She is loyal, loving, caring and hilarious.

Every girl needs a bestie like her and every girl deserves a bestie like YOU! Yes you..the one who is reading this right now. No not the girl behind you or to your left/right hand side...YOU! If you are anything like Julia then I give you a HELLS YEAH!!! YOU ROCK!!! WHOOP WHOOP!!! DROP IT LIKE IT'S HOT!!! SPANK THAT ASS!!! MOTOR BOAT!!!...(silence) <<< too much?? Eehhh

Alex...damn that man be F-I-N-E!!! (I can't wait to read more about him?? And if we I get more of him...just going to put it out there...can his love interest be named Crystal?) ;)

This book gives it all to you. Seriously it does. Barbie did such an outstanding job on her debut novel that I am so excited and can't wait to read more from her. The flow of the story is done beautifully and the characters are just amazing.

Way to go Barbie!! I am so super proud of you.

BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!

Until Next Time...

Happy Reading :)

Great writing, great story. It's a heartwarming, second chance story (I love those) that captivates you. The characters are so real that they make you feel like you're living this tale right there with them. I loved it.

"Well, then, who's your favorite band?"
"The Black Keys. You?"
"The Strokes."
"Who's your favorite singer?"
"Johnny Cash. You?"
"Alicia Keys."
"What's your favorite color?"
"Black."
"I'm sensing a theme here, Tyler."

When high school senior, Sabrina Chandler, sneaks out of her house to surprise her boyfriend at a party, she didn't expect to be the one surprised. Not only did she find her boyfriend in a compromising situation with her best friend, but local bad boy, Tyler Anderson, became her own personal savior in her darkest hour.

Flash forward 10 years and Sabrina is living in Miami with her best friend, Julia. When Sabrina finds an invitation to her upcoming 10 year reunion she is hesitant about facing the people of her past that hardened her heart. At the insistence of her best friend, and with a little hope of seeing Tyler after all this time, Sabrina is ready to face her demons.

Sabrina's homecoming is full of drama. Not only is her return the talk of the town, but her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend are lurking around every corner forcing Sabrina to face her past head on. But things for Sabrina start looking up once she comes face to face with Tyler again. Tyler is sexy, successful, and has been waiting for Sabrina all these years.

Over the course of a weekend, Sabrina and Tyler spend time with one another and start a relationship. This continues once Sabrina heads back home to Miami, and things are looking great so far. But one night changes the course of their new relationship and Sabrina is left reliving a familiar betrayal. Can Sabrina forgive a second time around, or will she be a prisoner to her past?

pmme

The debut novel by Barbie Bohrman was so much more than a love story. While there is plenty of romance and some swooning over Tyler, as well as her boss Adam, the romance I think is secondary to the story.

First, the friendship between Sabrina and Julia is just incredible. While Sabrina is more closed off, Julia is loud, hilarious and forces her friend to open her eyes to all the possibilities in front of her. Julia encourages Sabrina to take caution with the wind and live. I adore Julia and REALLY looking forward to her story.

Second, the journey that Sabrina takes to open her heart after the unforgivable is really touching. For anyone that has been betrayed, it is so hard to not let past doubts and insecurities cloud your judgement. Those moments in your life change you and how you handle future relationships. To see Sabrina move on from the chains that bound her, into a woman that takes chances, was really inspirational and left me feeling a sense of hope.

Lastly, the power of forgiveness really resonated with me long after I finished this book. Forgiveness often feels like a defeat, but there is power in letting go and moving on. But is Sabrina strong enough to forgive? Well you will have to read to find out!

Between the powerful emotions, the pop culture references, and the relationships between friends, family, and lovers, Promise Me is a book that you do not want to miss out on this summer. It made me laugh, cry (damn pms!) and left me with hope.

Sabrina is returning home after 10 years, for her high school reunion. She has stayed away for so long because during her senior year she was betrayed by her boyfriend of 3 years Chris and her childhood BFF Lisa. That horrible night she caught them cheating and the only person that was there for her was bad boy Tyler. They weren't exactly friends but had grown up in the area and had gone to school together for years. That night he made her hold it together, and gave her a ride home. He made her promise him: get rid of no good Chris, get the bitch Lisa out of her life, and get out of their town after graduation. Fast forward 10 years and Sabrina is living in Miami living with her new BFF Julia. Julia is amazing! Supportive, kind, honest to Sabrina and so damn funny! Julia convinces Sabrina to go and face the two people that hurt her. She never healed from that betrayal. But there's a bigger reason for Sabrina to go......Tyler. She's never forgotten him and what he did for her that night. There was also a connection that she never could let go of. At the reunion she faces Chris, who explains why he cheated. And Lisa, well that jealous manipulative bitch was served. Sabrina def came out on top. And yes, Tyler was there. And so was that connection. Tyler has turned into a sexy, successful man who also came to the reunion just to see Sabrina.
The rest of the story is about love, friendship, betrayal and forgiveness. Tyler and Sabrina were hot together. But he lives in Philly and she in Miami. Enter jealous Ava, and you get one hell of a blowup. I was in tears for Sabrina. Man I was so disappointed. But I liked how she handled it. I loved her friends interference and how that last call ended on a street in Philly. I liked these two, epi would've been nice.
