added a status update: 🫣 I'm not sure if I'm in it for the long run, but just now it seems I'm writing a horror story next (post-evil-genius) and it's kind of creeping me out.

added a status update: Two days ago I finished some last changes to EVIL GENIUS. The novel has now been "sent to production." Now comes the fun part: the cover, the inside design elements, and writing the jacket copy. Like my last two novels, this novel has scenes that are memoir-level true. It seems there always comes a point where I need to decide much to open up to the facts of my life, vs. keeping them safely part of a made-up story.

I re-read this novel in preparation for writing a scene in my novel Poor Deer, one that involves a car, plus some intense emotions. I don't know a lot of writers personally but the ones I do know seem to write very differently from the way I write. T ...more |

A reader left a review of Chouette recently that quoted this passage from Chouette: ‘I stay up a while, alone in the kitchen, drinking my twig tea and watching the spiders weave their webs. At times like these, the old voices resurrect themselves, and ...more |

“I prefer to speak in metaphor: That way, no logic can trap me, and no rule can bind me, and no fact can limit me or decide for me what’s possible.”

“I begin to understand what a gift I've been given, to have been chosen for this task. The truth overwhelms me, and humbles me. The birds are telling me that my life's work, as your mother, will be to teach you how to be yourself- and to honor however much of the wild world you have in you, owl-baby- rather than mold you to be what I want you to be, or what your father wants you to be.”
