Celtic's move for Portland Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe looks to be over.

The 26-year-old appeared to be edging closer to a £3m move to the Premiership champions during the January transfer window but reports last night indicated that the Hoops had pulled the plug on the deal.

Brendan Rodgers had targeted the US international as one of his priority signings and the Parkhead club were said to have already made an offer for the MLS star which fell short of Timbers' valuation of their star man.

ESPN are now claiming that it was Timbers, and not Celtic , who ended discussions over the move and the deal is dead in the water “for multiple reasons”.

Nagbe, had already been given the VIP treatment when he visited Parkhead for the Champions League clash against Barcelona last month and negotiations had been going well over a £10,000-a-week contract.

Hoops boss Rodgers was keen to sign the 10-times capped US international ahead of the club's winter training camp in Dubai but he is believed to have two other potential targets lined up.

It now looks highly unlikely that a deal for Nagbe will be resurrected as Celtic turn their attentions to trying to secure one of the other players on Rodgers' January wishlist.
