SEATTLE -- Lou Piniella and general manager Pat Gillick, the architects of the Mariners' 116-win team in 2001, will be joined by a large group of players from that American League West championship squad Saturday night at Safeco Field as the franchise honors the 10-year anniversary of the historic season this weekend.

The 2001 Mariners matched the 1906 Chicago Cubs for most wins in a Major League season, and no American League club has won more games than Seattle that year, when the team won the AL West by 14 games and led the division wire-to-wire.

Seventeen players from '01 will join Piniella and Gillick for a pregame ceremony prior to the 7:10 p.m. PT game against division-rival Texas.

Players will include second baseman Bret Boone, catcher Dan Wilson, first baseman John Olerud, oufielders Jay Buhner and Al Martin, utilityman Mark McLemore, starting pitchers Paul Abbott, Jamie Moyer, Aaron Sele and John Halama, relievers Norm Charlton, Arthur Rhodes, Ryan Franklin and Jeff Nelson and reserves Tom Lampkin and Charles Gipson.

Also in attendance, of course, will be 2001 MVP Ichiro Suzuki, still playing for the Mariners. Rhodes will be on the other side of the field, pitching out of the Rangers' bullpen. Also taking part will be former coaches Matt Sinatro, John McLaren and John Moses.

Edgar Martinez, a key member of that squad, will not be in attendance because of a scheduling conflict.

The bulk of the ceremonies will take place Saturday, but the first 20,000 fans on Friday evening will receive a McLemore/Mike Cameron Sweet 116 bobblehead with the two carrying an American flag as they did after clinching the division title that year shortly after the 9/11 attacks gripped the nation and stopped baseball for several days.

On Saturday, the first 20,000 fans will receive a 2001 commemorative T-shirt, the pregame ceremony will include introductions of the returning team members and video highlights and memories from that season.
