Unst Partnership

Area of Operation:

Island of Unst, Shetland
Northern Isles (Shetland & Orkney)

Established:
2000
Population:
Approx 600
Number of Staff:
7

How We Started

Established by Shetland Islands Council, Shetland Enterprise and the Unst Community Council in response to the loss of around 200 FTE jobs (over 40% of the islands workforce) in 4 years. There were 50 jobs lost at Unst Airport in 1996, and 150 lost at RAF Saxa Vord in 2000. The Unst Partnership was established to focus on new job creation to stop a continuing downward spiral of job losses as the fragile economy failed to sustain the remaining local employment.

What We Do

We support existing business development, new business start-up, and business relocation on Unst in order to sustain existing employment and create new jobs. In creating and supporting sustainable employment on the island, the Unst Partnership aims to stop population decline and contribute to economic regeneration.

Our Assets

  • The world’s first entirely off-grid, renewable hydrogen energy system
  • A considerable amount of professional computer and multi-media equipment.
