Different Buses for Different Jobs
Where once the agency relied on one type of bus, it now operates specific buses for specific duties. For express routes, the agency operates 45-foot MCI express coaches and for high volume local and limited service, NYC Transit runs 60-foot articulated buses. Most of the fleet is powered by ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, though supported by two depots, NYC Transit buses are fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). The entire fleet is accessible to persons with disabilities, employing either wheelchair lifts or a low-floor design that makes boarding and alighting easier for everyone.

With nearly 4,500 buses in the fleet, NYC Transit operates the largest clean-air fleet in North America. Barely 15 years after NYC Transit's original commitment to lower exhaust emissions, the largest bus fleet in North America now ranks among the cleanest in the world. The initial approach to cleaner exhausts was limited to investments in CNG; however, ongoing advancements in competing clean-air technologies have allowed the agency to broaden its approach in some promising ways.

For decades, NYC Transit operated a fleet of buses powered solely by two-stroke diesel engines. While they were extremely durable and economical to maintain, the old-design engines were not known for clean operation, particularly when not properly maintained. More than ten years ago, MTA New York City Transit's Department of Buses began to draw up plans to create the fleet of the future.
