India's 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist
Abhinav Bindra was recognised with Mentor of the Year accolade at the Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) 2024 in Lucknow on Saturday. The shooter became the first Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal during the Summer Games in China. Ever since, only Neeraj Chopra, in javelin throw, has matched that feat.
"It is an absolute honour to stand before all of you and in front of the finest athletes India has ever produced. This evening is a celebration of not just victories, medals, records but of resilience and determination and unwavering spirit that defines Indian sport," said Bindra upon being presented with the honour.

The 42-year-old shooter said her achievements paved the way for not just him but many others to dream of achieving big on the grandest stage.
He went on to thank the stakeholders in carrying Indians port forward including government and private entities.
"Today, the government, the private sector, institutions are working together to provide such structured programmes, high performance centres and financial assistance. Most importantly, we are seeing greater inclusion of women in sport. This shift is not just about numbers, it's about changing mindsets and proving that talent knows no gender.
"But being an athlete is about more than just winning medals. It is about carrying the hopes of a nation, inspiring future generations and upholding the values of discipline, integrity and sportsmanship. Each of you here tonight is not just a champion in your sport, you are an ambassador for India.
"That is the true power of sport. As we move forward, let us continue to push our limits, break barriers and inspire a nation that is hungry for sporting glory. Let us work together to ensure that India doesn't just participate but dominates on the world stage.
"And to all the incredible athletes in this room, thank you for your hard work, your sacrifices and for making India proud," he added.
TOISA continues its legacy of honouring India's finest athletes for a seventh edition, ensuring that their contributions to sports remain an inspiration for generations to come.
