Devin Williams impresses Yankees manager Aaron Boone with his mojo moment against the Orioles

Devin Williams was recently demoted from his closer position with the Yankees after struggling in his last ten games. Despite the demotion, Williams delivered a strong performance against the Orioles, helping to narrow the score deficit. Manager Aaron Boone praised Williams' aggressive pitching and expressed hope for his resurgence, while Luke Weaver is set to replace Williams in 2025.

Devin Williams made headlines for all the wrong reasons recently. The Yankees pitcher was demoted from the position of a closer on the team roster after a careful review of his performance in the past ten games. The news not only led to a major change in the Yankees’ roster but also became the talking point in the MLB fraternity. Despite being demoted, Devin Williams helped the Yankees bridge a significant score deficit during a recent face-off against the Baltimore Orioles.

After being demoted, Devin Williams was seen restricting the Orioles’ batters on the edge of the stadium during the recent game. Reportedly, he was called by the New York Yankees manager, Aaron Boone, as the team was trailing behind the Orioles. With Williams’ 14 pitches, the Yankees managed to bridge the score deficit, but ended up losing against the Orioles
During a post-game interview with the YES Network, Boone expressed being impressed by the pitching prowess of Devin Williams. Boone said-
“Really good. Just liked his look. It was aggressive, in the strike zone. He was aggressive with his fastball. Every changeup he threw. I liked the depth on the pitch. But also establishing his fastball in the strike zone with it. I thought he had some real good conviction with every pitch he threw.”
He further mentioned
“Hopefully it’s just little things here that get your mojo [back] and remind you how darn good you are at this game.”

Reportedly, when Devin Williams took the mound during the game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees were at 4-1. Williams also reacted to his demotion update and wasn’t surprised by the team’s move. He said-
"With the way things have gone recently, it's not really a shock to me. Being the closer is a position you have to earn, and you have to keep earning it to continue to be in that role. So lately, I haven't been doing that.”
Williams further mentioned
"It's disappointing. You work for years to get to that point, and to have that taken away from you, it's not a fun feeling at all. But I can't say it's undeserved. Not necessarily confidence, as much as what we’re doing as a group. The sequencing and things like that, just cleaning that up a little bit.”
Yankees pitching star Luke Weaver would be replacing Devin Williams for the 2025 MLB season. Weaver was a part of the Yankees roster back in the 2024 season, too.
