Arne Slot marked his first Premier League title in unforgettable fashion not just by delivering Liverpool’s 20th top-flight crown, but by leading Anfield in an emotional chant for former manager Jurgen Klopp.
On April 27, Liverpool thrashed Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield to seal the 2024-25 title with four games to spare. Though they only needed a point, Slot’s side put on a show, coming from behind after Dominic Solanke’s early goal to score five in front of a packed and roaring home crowd.
But the night’s most powerful moment came after the final whistle, when Slot took the microphone and led fans in singing the 1984 hit “Live Is Life”, replacing the lyrics with “Jurgen Klopp”, a touching mirror of what Klopp had done the season before during his own farewell, when he led the crowd in chanting Slot’s name.
“It feels great. I don’t think I want to say a lot. The only thing now is to send my appreciation to Jurgen Klopp,” Slot said on the pitch.
“The work Jurgen and Pep [Lijnders] did — the culture, work-rate, quality was outstanding.”
Slot later told BBC Match of the Day:
“I am 99.9 per cent sure that if I pick up my phone there will be a message from Jurgen. So many moments this season we’ve had contact.
He showed what a wonderful human being he is by introducing me last year. But what mattered most was the team he left behind, a team that was able to win the trophy.”
The current Liverpool squad remains mostly intact from Klopp’s final season, with only one major addition , Federico Chiesa, since Slot’s arrival. The title win marks Slot as just the fifth manager in
Premier League history to win the title in his debut season.
This win also meant something deeper for the fans. While Liverpool’s first Premier League title under Klopp in 2020 was celebrated behind closed doors due to COVID-19, this time, Anfield was packed. Slot made sure to remind everyone of the journey.
“Let’s forget that it’s the second [title] in 35 years , it’s the second in five years,” he said.
“The way we arrived on the bus, everyone was thinking, ‘There’s no way we’re going to lose this game.’ Conceding first made it difficult, but they always find a way to win.”
With this victory, Liverpool are now level with Manchester United on 20 top-flight titles — the most in English football history. Slot’s ability to carry forward Klopp’s legacy while putting his own stamp on the team has made him an early frontrunner for Manager of the Season.
