Grow and care for Curry leaves

Curry patta is a versatile plant, and a must-have in the kitchen or balcony garden. And while once it starts growing, the plant produces leaves for months at end, the process of growing is slow and tedious. So, here are some tips on how to make it grow faster.

Give it direct sunlight

Curry patta is not an indoor plant so don’t try to make it one. Make sure to keep the pot somewhere it will get at least 4 hours of indirect sunlight and about 2-3 hours of direct sunlight.

Soil mix

Don’t try to grow Curry leaves in ‘regular’ soil with just mulch, soil, and mud. If you want the plant to grow faster, add a mix of soil, compost, and cocopeat in equal parts.

Watering

Curry leaves need ample watering and should not go through dry spells. Water it everyday if they are receiving enough sunlight, and make sure to check the topsoil before adding more water. If the topsoil feels moist (not waterlogged) only then add water.

Prune it often

Pruning the stem parts where leaves are not growing anymore will encourage growth in the plant. When you pluck the dry stems it helps the healthy nodes get extra nutrition to produce more leaves, and do it quickly.

Epsom salt water

Curry leaves grow better and faster when they have enough magnesium in the soil. So, mix a tablespoon of Epsom salt in about 2 litres of water and add it to the soil. But, do not do this everyday, once a month is fine.

Buttermilk method

While this might sound a little unnecessary, adding diluted buttermilk to the soil does help the curry patta grow quicker. Add about 100ml of buttermilk to a liter of water, shake well, and then add half of it to the soil and spray the rest over the stems and nodes.

Mulch the roots

Often, the curry patta plant’s growth slows down because pests and insects are eating it from the inside. To prevent this, add a layer of mulch to the soil, or spray some neem oil and water mixture in the soil.

The right way to pinch the leaves

When your curry leaf plant starts producing enough leaves, make sure you don’t just pluck the leaves leaving the stem intact. Instead, break off half stems and then pluck the leaves out. When the other half of the stem is intact, it has a better chance of growing.
