All life forms start hibernating in the winter. The energy levels are low, the frost is chilly, and nature seems to be at rest. And thus, when springtime comes and nature gets its life and colour back, here are 8 things to do for a blooming home garden.

Spring is the best season to bring home new plants for the garden. It is neither too hot nor too cold and as the soil begins to warm up, the new plants get the perfect kickstart to growth.

It is never recommended to fertilise plants in the winters as it can place strain on the plant. And thus, as Springtime comes again, it is the perfect opportunity to fertilise any plants whose growth has stunted in the winter months.

The winters also leave behind dead, wilted leaves, some mold on the soil, wet and moist soil, and the likes. And so, it is best to clean the garden well when Spring hits. Remove the dirt, mold, dead leaves, and the likes so that pests are not attracted to it.

As Springtime comes it is best to prune and shape the plants well. As pruning is limited during the winter months to ensure that the plants get some natural warmth, pruning in the Spring becomes important to encourage new growth.

As frost and dew sets on the soil in winters, it turns the soil into wet clumps that stop growth. So, when the Spring sun comes up, turn and scrape the soil to remove any clumps or hard soil.

Watering is also limited in the winter months as evaporation is reduced. So, Spring is the perfect time to deep water the plants. Water the plants in the garden till the water flows out of the drain holes and mist well the stems and leaves.

The time between winter and peak summer is also great to sow seeds for summer flowers. Plant flowers like hibiscus, lavender, and bougainvillea, and keep pruning them through the days.

As decomposition also slows down in the winter months, Spring is the right time to restart the compost pile. Use a shovel or rake to mix the compost bin and aerate the pile and add fresh kitchen scraps and old leaves or twigs too into it.
