Panipat wedding turns ugly: Swords drawn as groom leaves without bride over Chandni Chowk lehenga

Weddings in India are often touted as grand celebrations filled with love, tradition, and elaborate fashion, and are rightly called the 'great Indian wedding' but sometimes, the bridal lehenga itself becomes the centre of controversy. A recent wedding in Panipat, Haryana, took a dramatic turn when a disagreement over the bride’s lehenga escalated into a full-blown conflict, ultimately leading to the wedding being called off.

The chaos unfolded on February 23, 2025, when a groom from Amritsar, Punjab arrived in Panipat with his baraat, expecting a seamless ceremony. However, tensions flared when the bride’s family objected to the lehenga brought by the groom’s side, insisting she wear the one they had purchased from Chandni Chowk for ₹40,000. The disagreement quickly spiraled out of control, with both families trading accusations and tempers running high.
The groom’s family alleged in an interview to ETV Bharat that the bride’s relatives kept increasing their demands with time, initially requesting a lehenga worth ₹20,000 before insisting on a more expensive one. They also claimed that the bride’s family pressured them into the marriage and demanded costly gifts. On the other hand, the bride’s mother, a widow struggling to make daily ends meet, accused the groom’s family of failing to provide even the most basic wedding essentials, including garlands, and bringing artificial jewellery instead of real gold jewellery.

As tensions escalated, the situation turned violent when a guest allegedly pulled out a sword, throwing the wedding into complete chaos. The police had to intervene to restore order, but by then, the damage was done, the marriage was officially called off, leaving both families with nothing but bitter memories. According to a police official in Haryana, a complaint was received on Dial-112 and when the police reached the place, they found both families up in arms. "They have cancelled the wedding. We have heard from both parties. Our task is to pacify the matter and hand over the victims to the concerned police station who will again hear both parties and resolve the matter," the police official was quoted as saying by the news channel.

What should have been a joyous celebration became a cautionary tale of how a seemingly simple outfit choice can unravel an entire wedding. In the world of grand Indian weddings, it turns out that the bridal lehenga isn’t just a garment, it’s a statement, an emotion and sometimes, a battleground.
Brides are often unwavering when it comes to their wedding outfit, as it symbolises one of the most significant days of their lives. From the fabric to the embroidery and even the shade of a colour, every detail matters immensely. For many, their bridal attire is not just a dress but a reflection of their dreams, cultural heritage, and personal style. Months of meticulous planning, multiple trials, and countless inspirations go into selecting the perfect ensemble. Given the emotional and financial investment, any deviation from their vision can be a major disappointment, sometimes, even leading to drastic decisions, as seen in cases where weddings have been called off over an unsatisfactory lehenga.
Wedding fiascos are not uncommon in India, where grand celebrations often come with high emotions, family expectations, and, at times, heated disputes. From last-minute dowry demands to disagreements over wedding arrangements, tensions can escalate, leading to dramatic fallouts. However, it is rare to hear of a marriage breaking over something as seemingly simple as a bridal lehenga. While attire holds deep cultural significance, such an extreme reaction over a clothing choice highlights the growing pressure surrounding weddings, where even minor disagreements can spiral into irreparable conflicts.
