The protest affected traffic for an hour.
SALEM: Students studying in a private school in Old Suramangalam here and their parents blocked the Salem-Tharamangalam State Highway on Monday to protest what they called the move to close the school. Their protest affected traffic for an hour.
Sri Ramalinga Vallalar Higher Secondary School has been serving the Old Suramangalam area for more than two decades. It was reported that the school got a new management. "We heard that the new management might close the school next academic year," said K Valarmathi, a parent.
In reaction to this rumour, parents and students blocked the state highway. On learning of the protest, Salem West MLA R Arul reached the spot and pleaded with the school management not to close the school.
Police from Steelplant and Suramangalam facilitated discussions between the school management and the parents. The management assured the protesters that the school would not be closed. The protest was called off after the management gave the assurance.
