Extortion, gang rape accused injured in 2 police encounters in Gopalganj
Patna: Four people, accused of extortion and gang rape, were injured in two separate encounters in Gopalganj district in the early hours of Tuesday. The first encounter took place in Savreji village of Mirganj police station area, while the second occurred in Kuchaykot area. All injured are undergoing treatment at sadar hospital.
In the Mirganj encounter, Ayush Kumar, accused of demanding Rs 5 lakh extortion from a jeweller, was shot in the leg, while two of his companions managed to flee. Ayush, a resident of Savreji village, was admitted to sadar hospital under police custody.
He had demanded the extortion from jeweller Praveen Soni, who runs a shop in Mirganj. Police received information on Monday night that the criminals came to collect the first instalment of Rs 1 lakh extortion, on the basis of which the siege was laid.
In the second incident, police conducted raids at Sasamusa area around 3.30am to catch the accused, absconding in a case of abduction and gang rape of a 17-year-old girl who had come from Uttar Pradesh for the treatment of her father. Seeing the police, the accused started firing. In retaliation, the police also fired shots, injuring Kariman Kumar, Abhishek Kumar and Sonu Kumar.
According to the police, they had already arrested Abhishek, but during the raid, he snatched their weapon and tried to flee. But the police managed to nab him. A country-made pistol, revolver and cartridges were recovered from the spot.
Gopalganj sadar subdivisional police officer Pranjal Tripathi said that all the accused sustained bullet injuries to their legs. "After treatment, they will be forwarded to jail," he told this newspaper.
According to police sources, seven encounters have taken place in Gopalganj so far this year 2025, in which an accused, Manish Yadav, was killed.
