Thrikkakara municipality to set up modern slaughterhouse
Kochi: In an effort to ensure quality of meat sold in the region, Thrikkakara municipality invited tenders for the construction of a modern slaughterhouse. The proposed facility, funded with an allocation of Rs 8 crore, is expected to significantly enhance hygiene and efficiency in meat processing.
According to officials from the municipality's health wing, the facility will feature advanced infrastructure and will have the capacity to slaughter up to 150 cattle at a time. "We will implement strict quality control measures before and after slaughter. Veterinary doctors will be present to inspect the animals and a scientific waste management system will be in place," said an official.
The local body shortlisted 1.5 acres of land for the project, with plans to fully mechanise the operations from slaughtering to meat processing. "We invited expressions of interest from the public based on specific criteria. Among the responses received, one plot appears suitable," the official added.
However, officials are conducting further assessments to ensure the best possible location is selected. The chosen plot must be within 100 metres of a main road at least three metres wide and have adequate water supply. The municipality is still accepting expressions of interest from landowners meeting these conditions.
Of the Rs 8 crore budget, Rs 6 crore will be allocated for land acquisition, while the remaining amount will be used for purchasing advanced machinery for the slaughterhouse.
