VIJAYAWADA: Senior Andhra Pradesh IPS officer P Sitarama Anjaneyulu was arrested Tuesday in connection with alleged harassment and wrongful arrest of a Mumbai-based actress last year.
Anjaneyulu had served as intelligence chief during YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's tenure as CM. The officer had been suspended over the case in Sept 2024.
Andhra Pradesh CID picked up Anjaneyulu in Hyderabad and later took him to its Vijayawada office for further proceedings.
Anjaneyulu is accused of misusing his official position to orchestrate the "illegal" arrest of the actress and her parents from Mumbai, reportedly on instructions of a senior YSRCP leader, Kukkala Vidyasagar. The case has gained prominence due to the involvement of multiple senior police officials and its politically sensitive nature.
.According to CID, Anjaneyulu allegedly played a key role in deciding what charges to file against the actress, how to arrest her, and who else to implicate. The actress alleged that she and her elderly parents were wrongly jailed and that a group of senior officers, including Anjaneyulu, acted in collusion with Vidyasagar.
The arrest stemmed from a Feb 2024 case in which Vidyasagar accused the actress of forging documents and selling a property at Jaggaiahpet in Krishna district. However, CID found the complaint part of a larger conspiracy driven by a land dispute. The actress has accused Vidyasagar of fabricating land documents to frame her.
After being picked up from Mumbai by Andhra Pradesh cops, the actress and her family were brought to Vijayawada, where they spent over 40 days in judicial custody before being granted bail. After coming out, the actress filed a complaint, following which the N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP govt initiated disciplinary action against the officials.
The CID has named six individuals as accused: Kukkala Vidyasagar (A1), P Sitarama Anjaneyulu (A2), former Vijayawada commissioner of police Kanti Rana Tata (A3), former Vijayawada west zone ACP Hanumanth Rao (A4), former Ibrahimpatnam inspector Satyanarayana (A5), and IPS officer Vishal Gunni (A6). Among them, three IPS officers — Anjaneyulu, Kanti Rana, and Vishal Gunni — have already been placed under suspension.
