Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) conducted a driverless train trial on Monday along Corridor 4 of its Phase 2 project. The train was operated beyond Mullai Thottam up to Porur Junction at a speed of 40 kmph.
The 10km viaduct section connects Poonamallee Bypass with Porur Junction. The Poonamallee Metro Depot is the key coordination hub during this trial phase.
CMRL Managing Director M A Siddique, along with directors from various departments, inspected the trial run. They reviewed the train’s performance and alignment with project goals.
Siddique said the extended trials marked a crucial milestone in Phase 2 and demonstrated CMRL’s commitment to fast-tracking project timelines.
Dynamic tests during the trial aim to evaluate safety parameters and passenger comfort standards, helping progress the corridor toward public readiness.
CMRL confirmed that Stage 1 trials will continue in the coming weeks, with the agency aiming to open the corridor for public use at the earliest.
The first Phase 2 trial was conducted on March 20 on a 2km stretch between Poonamallee and Mullai Thottam, using the same driverless train at 25 kmph.
