Utah has once again taken the top spot in the US News & World Report’s annual ranking of the best states in America. This marks the third consecutive year that Utah has earned the number one position, due to its strong performance across multiple categories.
The rankings are based on eight broad measures of state performance: health care, education, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, crime and corrections, and natural environment. Utah ranked in the top 10 in most categories, making it a consistent overall leader. Four other states rounded out the top five: New Hampshire, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Idaho. Each excelled in key areas like quality of life, economic health, and governance.
Still, the overall picture remains impressive. A booming tech sector in areas like Salt Lake City drives the state’s fast-growing economy, sometimes called “Silicon Slopes.” This has attracted major companies, created jobs, and spurred innovation.
Governor Spencer Cox praised the achievement: "From our strong economy to our top-tier educational institutions, Utahns continue to show the nation how service, faith, freedom, and opportunity are foundational to success.”
As Utah celebrates its “three-peat” victory, it continues to serve as a national example of what strategic governance and long-term planning can achieve for others, and there's still work to be done on environmental sustainability.

Utah
In the 2025 report, Utah showed impressive rankings across various categories. It was first in fiscal stability, third in both economy and infrastructure, and fourth in education. However, the state faced challenges in other areas, ranking 7th in crime and corrections, 14th in health care, and 19th in opportunity. Notably, it ranked 48th in natural environment, as concerns over air quality, pollution, and industrial toxic emissions have negatively affected the state’s environmental rating.

New Hampshire
New Hampshire remains strong due to its exceptional rankings in crime and corrections (1st) and health care (2nd). The state also performs well in education and maintains one of the lowest poverty rates in the country. With no state sales or income tax, it remains an attractive place for both residents and businesses. The state's small size and community-oriented approach to governance contribute to a high standard of living and civic engagement.Nebraska
Nebraska’s solid infrastructure, steady economy, and strong employment numbers helped it climb to third place. The state ranked high in infrastructure and fiscal stability, which goes back to years of consistent investment in roads, utilities, and public services. It also maintains a low unemployment rate and supports agriculture, manufacturing, and tech-based industries. Nebraska's central location and cost of living make it appealing to both families and businesses.Minnesota
Minnesota remains a national leader in health care and education, scoring highly in both categories. It is also known for its high quality of life, low crime rate, and strong social safety net. With major urban centers like Minneapolis-St. Paul balanced by vast rural areas, the state offers a mix of innovation and natural beauty. However, affordability and racial disparities in outcomes remain challenges that the state is actively addressing.Idaho
Idaho has emerged as one of the fastest-growing states in terms of population and job creation. It scored well in economy, crime & corrections, and opportunity. With relatively low taxes, a business-friendly environment, and access to outdoor recreation, Idaho attracts remote workers, entrepreneurs, and young families. The state’s tech sector is also growing rapidly, particularly in the Boise area, adding to its long-standing strengths in agriculture and manufacturing. As Utah celebrates its “three-peat” victory, it continues to serve as a national example of what strategic governance and long-term planning can achieve for others, and there's still work to be done on environmental sustainability.
