Egg prices in the US have finally seen a decrease after months of rising costs. The drop follows a record high in March. Government data confirms the fall, but prices are still higher than usual.

Retail Prices Show First Drop in Months

US retail egg prices fell in April. The average cost for a dozen Grade A eggs dropped to $5.12. In March, the price had reached $6.23. This is based on Consumer Price Index data. It is the first decline since October 2024.

    Steepest Monthly Drop Since 1984

The average price for eggs of all sizes fell by 12.7% in April. This is the biggest one-month decrease since March 1984. Although wholesale prices had already declined, it was uncertain if retail prices would follow. High seasonal demand during Easter and Passover added to the uncertainty.

    Bird Flu Keeps Prices Elevated

Despite the drop, prices remain high. A bird flu outbreak has affected many egg-laying hens. In April, egg prices were still 79% higher than the same month last year. A year ago, the average was $2.86 per dozen.

Bird flu has killed over 169 million birds since 2022. Infected birds must be culled to stop the spread. After a cull, farms need up to a year to recover. Egg farms often house millions of birds. In April, outbreaks in Ohio and South Dakota killed more than 927,000 hens.

    Efforts to Control Crisis

President Donald Trump had pushed for lower egg prices. In February, the USDA announced a $1 billion investment. The funds will help farmers improve safety measures to control bird flu.

To boost supply, the US increased egg imports. Countries like South Korea, Turkey and Brazil are key exporters. Imports of eggs and related products rose by 77.5% in early 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

    Ongoing Investigation

The Department of Justice is reviewing Cal-Maine Foods. The company is the top US egg supplier. It provides about 20% of the nation's eggs. Cal-Maine confirmed the investigation in April. The firm is based in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Its profits tripled to $508.5 million for the quarter ending March 1.

    FAQs

Why are egg prices still high despite the recent drop?
Egg prices remain high due to bird flu outbreaks, which reduce supply. It takes months for farms to recover after culling birds, slowing production.

What actions is the US taking to lower egg prices?
The government has increased imports and allocated funds to improve farm safety. Investigations are also underway to check for price manipulation by major suppliers.
