Dan Lilker Retiring From Music This Year, Brutal Truth To Disband In October

Dan Lilker of Brutal Truth has checked in with the following announcement about retiring from music:

"I regret to inform Brutal Truth fans that as of October 18th, 2014, I will be retiring from being a full time recording and touring musician.

"That date is my 50th birthday, so I chose it symbolically as a significant milestone to make such a weighty decision. As a lot of you know, I've been an active member of the metal scene since the early 80s with the thrash metal bands I've been in before the formation of Brutal Truth in 1990, and I'm simply just tired of the rigors of touring mostly.

"Unlike some of my peers from the 80's who went on to sell millions of records I have always been drawn to extreme underground metal. I don't care about staying in 5 star hotels and having a big cushy tour bus but I am getting tired of squeezing into a van for 8 hours after all these years on the road. I have always played what I believe in and that is been priority #1, but the time has come to have a little bit more stability in my life.

"Brutal Truth will still be active on the touring front until mid-October and will aim to do as much as we can in the next 9 months or so. After that, I will still have creative output with my 2 local bands in Rochester NY, Nokturnal Hellstorm and Blurring and do the occasional project tour, but yes, as of mid-October, Brutal Truth will no longer exist.

"I do realize that will be an extreme disappointment to all the grind freaks out there that have supported this band so rabidly all these years, and your enthusiasm will always have a special place in my heart, but I've made my decision, and I hope everyone can respect that."

Was lucky enough to see Lilker perform in Nuclear Assault, S.O.D. , and Brutal Truth. Love his performance on "Speak English or Die". The opening bass line for "Milk" is badass.

Given the hand he's had in so many popular bands, I'm surprised this isn't headline news.

Post 4: Yea, you're right, because they won't be a band another more. Sad though. Brutal Truth was intense. One of the few grind bands I was kind of into.

Post 7: I agree that it is sad, but at least Dan will still be around. Yeah, Brutal Truth was one of the first grindcore bands I discovered. I discovered them because of the fact that Dan was in it. Nuclear Assault will never be the same, but I'm sure they'll go on without him, that happened once when they made "Something Wicked". Their post-"Handle With Care" has been semi-mediocre anyway.

Pioneer.
Legend.
Lilker was one of thrash's early bassists that really had an, in your face sound.
Handle With Care is still in my top thrash ten albums of all time.
That album is perfection....magic.

Saw Dan performing at Bradford, UK back in 1995 with Brutal Truth. Also on the bill that night were Pungent Stench & Macabre. Awesome lineup, what a gig that was!
I saw Nuclear Assault on the 'Something Wicked' tour in 1993. Dan wasn't in Nuclear Assault at that time & he was missed massively. The band totally refused to play some of their slow fast songs like 'Hang the pope' & 'Lesbians'.
Dan's one of the heroes of my youth & a legend in my eyes. I hope he stays involved in music in some capacity because that's what he does. Respect brother.

Respect, Dan. You have kept your integrity and not been saddled with the materialistic aspects of it all. I myself hit that same milestone in 2014 and know what you're saying about the stability part. Get yourself some rest and time for you, and then you can pick and choose what you want to do - and you will. Underground metal heads never really leave the scene.

Sad, but understandable news. Dan is one of the most relevant and progressive musicians for the extreme metal scene. His work with The Ravenous was most excellent.

Loved Brutal Truth. I guess there comes a time and turning 50 is as good a time as any. Thanks for all the brutal music over the years! Enjoy whatever it is your path takes you on.
