A former Florida lawmaker has been indicted on nine counts of wire fraud for allegedly using campaign funds to cover personal expenses, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Former Rep. Dwayne L. Taylor, D-Daytona Beach, faces up to 20 years in federal prison for each count if he is convicted. The indictment was unsealed Thursday by U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III.

During Taylor’s re-election campaigns in 2012 and 2014, he falsely reported thousands of dollars of campaign expenses to the State of Florida in an attempt to hide his misuse of funds, according to the indictment. Taylor, 49, allegedly withdrew cash, wrote checks to himself and wrote checks to petty cash.

Prosecutors are seeking $62,834, which represents the amount of money he received from his alleged misuse of funds, according to the indictment.
